We confirm the previously claimed protection by 5-fluorouracil against ultraviolet radiation on the skin. We conclude that such protection is the result of absorption of erythema producing light (wavelengths less than 320 nm). Previously reported absorption of 5-fluorouracil in the 260– to 280-nm range was determined at concentrations several thousandfold less than those tested by us and used clinically. Our absorption studies, carried out in the clinical concentration range, show that 5-fluorouracil absorbs light even into long wave ultraviolet (greater than 320 nm). An earlier report described a technique for assessing long ultraviolet (UV) phototoxicity, based on measurement of increased paw weight of psoralen-sensitized rats after exposure to black light. The procedure was modifled and employed to demonstrate that dihydroxyacetone/naphthoquinone (DHA/lawsone) protects sensitized rats against light. The observed effectiveness of DHA/lawsonein the animal model agreeswith our clinical success in protecting photosensitive patients against long UV light.

The association of lichen myxedematosus and dermatomyositis is uncommon. The patient in this study developed cutaneous mucinosis several years before the myositis. Histological and histochemical studies confirmed the diagnosis of a mucinosis and myositis, and showed that the fibroblast plays a significant role in the production of the skin lesions.

The long-range efficacy of the standard treatment for superficial dermatomycoses is, in the majority of cases, unsatisfactory, even despite the advent of griseofulvin. The present paper reports an attempt to treat patients suffering from superficial dermatomycoses (Monilia and tinea) by specific immunotherapy. The follow-up period on patients receiving a full course of immunotherapy was 18 months. Of 39 patients receiving immunotherapy with Trichophyton as antigen, 22 were cured completely and an additional 4 showed partial cure (skin lesion healed but nails unaffected). Of 24 patients treated with Monilia antigen, 15 recovered completely. These results, although based on a limited number of cases, are fairly encouraging and point to immunotherapy as an additional method in the treatment of superficial dermatomycoses.

Eleven patients with hypertrophic and one patient with atrophic lichen planus of the oral mucosa were treated using retinoic acid (vitamin A acid) in different forms of administration. The most satisfactory results have been obtained in asymptomatic cases showing a plaquelike hypertrophic appearance on the buccal mucosa. The possibleside effects of such treatment are mentioned.

A young lady with epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica et albo-papuloidea Pasini t(EBDAP) is reported. The diagnosis could be made through the clinico-morphological picture of albo-papuloid efflorescences (APE), their localisation on the trunk and extremities. The involvement of the nape of the neck, retro-auricular region, and scalp is also stressed. The efflorescences appeared 2–3 weeks after her birth, and bullae started developing at the sites subject to pressure just a few days after birth. The diagnosis was determined histopathologically. Two cases of hidrotic hereditary ectodermal dysplasia are reported in father and son. The disease has an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Out of the studied 21 members of the family 12 showed the same changes, namely, palmar and plantar keratodermia, pachyonychia, atrichia, hyperhidrosis and hypoplasia of the skin capillaries. The palmar keratodermia was especially pronounced in the father. The cytogenetic study of the patients displayed a high percentage of aneuploidy (chiefly of the hypodiploid type) and in the father a high percentage of endoreduplication (twins).

A case with fixed drug eruption involving only an unusual site is reported. The patient was a 35-year-old Japanese woman who showed bizzare pigmented macules on the dorsum of the tongue; they were demonstrated to have been caused by fixed drug eruption due to aminopyrine contained in a medicine for headache which she had taken occasionally for the past 10 years. The patient is regarded as a peculiar case of fixed drug eruption because of the following facts; (1) the fixed drug eruption affected only the tongue, and (2) it left markedly pigmented areas.
