The relation between the type of hyperlipoproteinemia and the xanthoma type found in the same patient is discussed on the basis of literature and own observations. The cholesterol level of the blood gives not enough information on disturbances in the lipoprotein metabolism, at least also triglyceride and/or total lipid estimations should be performed. Xanthomata tendinea are characteristic for an enhanced low density lipoprotein level in the blood and are often accompanied by ischemic heart disease. Eruptive xanthomata and enhanced very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) levels belong together. The enhanced VLDL level may be favorably influenced by a reduction diet with a low proportion of carbohydrates.

The skin of six cases of incontinentia pigmenti was studied electron microscopically. The patients ranged from 9 days to 34 years of age and included one male. Ultrastructural alterations observed confirmed the clinical staging of the disease. Early in the illness both deposition of melanin into the dermis by epidermal melanocytes and an abnormal population of melanocytes high in the epidermis were noted. Also deposition of melanin in Schwann cells was seen. With the passage of time there was first dysfunction and finally atrophy of melanocytes and dispersal of the dermal deposits of melanin.

The size and development of the sebaceous glands lining the inner and outer surfaces of the ear were compared in intact rabbits, castrated juvenile rabbits, and castrates subsequently treated with relatively high doses of a depot androgen preparation (Triolandren®). It was found that the glands in the inner surface skin reacted much more strongly than those in the outer surface, especially in the androgen-treated castrates. Only slight differences in reactivity were found in the untreated castrates, and the controls showed no clear-cut differences at all

Halogenated oxyquinolines have a pronounced therapeutic effect in acrodermatitis enteropathica. Since 1966, however, ocular and neurological side effects have been reported at the high doses required to obtain a clinical effect. We describe a patient in whom we followed the concentration of chlorquinaldol (5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline, Sterosan®) in plasma. The improvement in the skin condition was related to the dose; at a plasma concentration of 0.8–1.1 mg% the status was satisfactory. The half-life after ingestion of 300 mg Sterosan was calculated to be about 7 h. At a dosage of 300 mg every 8th hour a steady-state level of around 0.8-1 mg% was attained. We do not know the relationship between plasma levels and therapeutic and toxic effects. An answer to this question could be obtained by following up several cases on long-term treatme

A routine method using quantitative thin-layer chromatography for the determination of the retention time of an applied ointment on healthy and psoriatic skin is described. The retention time of the ointment was longer on the diseased skin than on the healthy skin. The method is thought to be of practical value in cosmetology and clinical dermatology.

Clinical and histological features in 40 patients of a pigmentary disorder, hitherto undescribed in Indians, are presented. The resemblance of this entity to somewhat similar disorders seen in other parts of the world and its possible relation to lichen planus is discussed.

A case of subcutaneous nodular sarcoid in a Negro is described. There were no other dermatological manifestations. This appears to be the third such case described in the English literature. Treatment with prednisone resulted in complete resolution of the nodules in 6 weeks.

The erythrodermic, angiolupoid and ulcerative forms of sarcoidosis are known as rare skin manifestations of this disease. We shall report on a 63-year-old woman who, since 1950, suffered from multiple therapy-resistant ulcers of both legs. These ulcers appeared in the areas of preexisting lesions of sarcoidosis. The microscopic examination of an ulcer revealed typical epithelioid cell granulomas with thickening and hyaline sclerosis of the vessel walls and partial occlusion.
