184 strains of Staph. aureus isolated consecutively from 96 out-patients, without pyogenic dermatoses, were studied from the point of view of their resistance-sensitivity both to mercuric chloride (Moore’s test) and to four basic antibiotics, and from the point of view of phage typing. The frequency of staphylococci carriers, in the absence of pyogenic dermatoses, was high (64.6%). 40.3% of carriers yielded staphylococci from the nose and skin simultaneously; 46.8% were skin carriers exclusively and 12.9% were only nasal carriers. Extensively contaminated skin usually carried one phage type of Staph. aureus

In a 37-year-old male, a melanoblastoma was observed consisting for the most part of clear vacuolated cells. The tumour cells in the lymph node metastasis were of common appearance typical for melanoblastomas of the alveolar type. The presence of clear cells can be misleading in the establishment of the accurate bioptic diagnosis. The behaviour of the clear cell melanoblastoma shows no difference from other types of this tumour. No definitive explanation of clear cell transformation in melanoblastomas is given at present.

The sum of the skin surface lipids was determined by the extraction method according to Honsio, by the osmium acid test according to Brun et al. and by visual estimation. With the two latter methods it was possible to exclude with sufficient certainty a pronounced seborrhoea or sebostasis. The use of the osmium acid test did not offer any advantages over the visual judgment of skin types.

Fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugated rabbit antibodies to keratinase II were used to detect keratinase II and antibodies to keratinase II in sections of previously infected guinea pig skin. The presence of the enzyme or an antibody reaction to the enzyme was indicated by a perifollicular pattern of green fluorescence at the level of the external root sheath of the hair follicle. The results indicate that keratinase II is produced during infection with T. mentagrophytes var. granulosum. There is a local reaction to the enzyme in tissue which is also observed at the injection site following immunization with active keratinase II.

In 4 cases of lichen ruber planus, fibrin was demonstrated using the immunohistochemical technique described by Avrameas. In accordance with the results obtained by immunofluorescent microscopy, fibrin deposits could be revealed in a band-like pattern at the dermo-epidermal junction, as intra- and pericapillary masses and round- or ovoid-shaped bodies in the papillary region and basal layer of the epidermis.

Whether blood mononuclear cells are totipotential and can give rise to fibrocytes is still controversial. Most recent studies seem to favor that fibrocytes arise locally from perivascular resting undifferentiated cells. We have attempted to determine the origin of fibrocytes utilizing tritiated thymidine (3HT) autoradiography. Multiple skin incisional wounds were produced in the dorsa of rats and a subsequent single intraperitoneal injection of 3HT was given at varying periods after injury. Biopsies were taken from individual animals at varying intervals up to 192 h after injury. Sections representing biopsies up to 15.5 h after injury, taken from animals injected at 4, 7, 8, and 11.5 h after injury, did not show labeling of monocytes, fibrocytes or endothelial cells. Biopsies taken from these same animals at varying intervals after 16 h showed labeling of these cells. These observations indicate that new-labeled fibrocytes which appeared in the wound were labeled at a distant site since labeling did not occur locally 1 h after a pulse injection of 3HT. Our findings thus support the concept that blood-borne mononuclear cells can give rise to some of the fibrocytic cells in repair of wounds.

The collected data of 38 patients with Kaposi’s sarcoma seen within 10 years (1960–1970) were analysed. 30 were males and 8 females, with 26 originating in East and Central Europe. In the majority, the disease had begun in the 5th and 6th decade. In most patients, only the skin was involved and the outcome was relatively good. In 4 patients, there was a general spread to skin and in 4 visceral involvement, with a lethal outcome in all 8. It is concluded that the prognosis depends on the clinical form taken by the disease and that the effect of treatment is minor. It was the authors’ impression that in cases with typical initial localisation (skin of feet and legs), there is less of a tendency for a spread to other organs, with a good prognosis, while in cases in which the disease starts elsewhere, the tendency towards spreading is more pronounced and the prognosis is more se

In four children, dermatitis developed following contact with kerosine-soaked clothing. Experimental reproduction of the disease was achieved in volunteer subjects by application of kerosine, supporting the view that kerosine dermatitis is of primary irritant type. Studies on the physical factors related to the skin irritability to kerosine demonstrated the following facts: (1) The skin of the Negroes appeared to be less irritable to kerosine than that of Caucasians; (2) the influence of aging is not clear, (3) no definite correlation was noted between the individual cutaneous response to kerosine and permeability of the horny layer measured by TCSA penetration time; (4) the blood circulation seems to be influencial in the skin irritability to kerosine, and the low irritability of the forehead can be explained by the richness of the dermal vasculature.

In two patients with CDLE, inclusions were found in nuclei of lymphocytes of a chronic inflammatory skin infiltrate. The inclusions were similar to the known virus-like particles localized in the cytoplasma. They may represent nucleocapsids of an unknown virus. Origin and significance of inclusions observed in nuclei of necrobiotic basal cells in one patient with SLE are not clear.
