We have established nonmetastatic mouse B16 melanoma clone, C1-2, and metastatic variant, C4-1, by subcloning the 30th passage of nonmetastatic W1-4 cells. We have investigated oncogene expression and chromosomal abnormalities to see whether there is some correlation with tumor progression and phenotypic diversification in melanoma cells. Not only metastatic C4-1 but also nonmetastatic C1-2 showed similarly high expression of c-Ha-ras and c-myc oncogenes by Northern blotting method. The chromosome numbers of both clones were distributed mainly within the range of 48–52. C1-2 had about 20 biarmed chromosomes and C4-1 had 13 or 14, which made real ploidy of C1-2 and C4-1, hypotetraploidy and triploidy, respectively. 21 marker chromosomes were commonly observed, while 9 marker chromosomes peculiar to C1-2 and 4 peculiar to C4-1 were constantly recognized. In partial accordance with a previous report, chromosomes 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 13, 18, 19, and X were additionally observed in nonmetastatic C1-2 cells, compared with metastatic C4-1 cells. Histoid leprosy is a fascinating expression of multibacillary leprosy, the incidence of which was 3.6%. It was seen predominantly in males of the younger age group, who were on inadequate and irregular dosage of diaminodiphenyl sulfone. Papules, cutaneous and/or subcutaneous nodules and plaques appearing over apparently normal skin were its exquisite prospective clinical features. It was invariably supported by enormous, uniformly solid staining discrete bacilli from the lesions, in contrast to their virtual absence from the surrounding normal-appearing skin. Encapsulated tumorous mass, formed primarily by spindle-shaped histocytes, displayed either in intertwining, criss-cross or whorled fashion in haematoxylin-eosin-stained sections, were supplementary. The morphology of acid-fast bacilli was, however, similar to skin-slit smears.

A randomized double-blind study was designed with 65 patients in order to clarify two points: (1) does addition of a retinoid to psoralen-ultra violet A photochemotherapy (PUVA) of severe psoriasis decrease the UVA energy required to achieve remission, and (2) is there a difference between two retinoids, i.e. etretinate and acitretin. Acitretin-PUVA treatment was significantly superior to placebo-PUVA with respect to several items (decrease in lesional scores after 6 weeks of therapy, number of PUVA exposures, and total dose of UVA until remission). There were also differences between the etretinate-PUVA and placebo-PUVA groups, but only the decrease in lesional scores reached statistical significance.

44 patients with multiple recalcitrant warts were treated with weekly applications of diphencyprone. 20 patients were cured completely and 17 improved with reduction in the number or dimension of warts. Plantar warts responded less satisfactorily. Sensitization is not always tolerated by patients and the risk of eczema spreading to other sites must be considered. However, topical immunotherapy has to be considered as an alternative means of treatment in selected patients. The mode of action is discussed.

Five patients suffering from dermatitis ulcerosa (a variant of pyoderma gangrenosum) were treated with clofazimine in a daily dosage of 200 mg orally. Complete healing was noted in 2 patients, partial response in 2, no effect in 1. Side effects were mild and transitory in form of a red coloring of the skin (all patients) and mild ichthyosis (2 patients).

A three-year old patient had ichthyosis and neutral lipid storage disease (Chanarin-Dorfman syndrome), characterized by congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma and leukocyte vacuoles. He did not show any of the internal system involvement that was found in previously described cases. Patients with this syndrome demonstrate a great variability of clinical involvement. The affliction may be very mild as in our case or it may lead to rapid death, as with the patient’s brother born a Harlequin baby, who only survived 5 days. Because of this wide spectrum of clinical variability mild cases might escape diagnosis. It is, therefore, suggested that every case of ichthyosis should have a peripheral blood smear evaluation with special attention to the morphology of the leukocytes. Our case clearly demonstrates the value of such a screening examination. A 59-year-old woman with a history of papillary carcinoma of the thyroid gland developed three reddish nodules on the scalp. A skin biopsy showed a dermal tumor composed of sheets of clearly differentiated thyroid vesicles. Cutaneous metastases of thyroid carcinoma are very rare and this case is the first case confirmed by immunoperoxidase studies using monoclonal antithyroglobulin antibody. Positive reactions were obtained in colloid and at apices of thyrocytes. Monoclonal antibodies to human thyroglobulin may offer a unique opportunity to confirm the tissue origin of cutaneous metastasis.

In order to study the elimination of Ro 10-1670 (acitretin) and Ro 13-7652, its 13-cis-isomeric metabolite after chronic administration, determination of the residual plasma concentrations of these two compounds were assayed in 9 patients in a range of 22–30 days following cessation of a 2- to 7.5-month course with daily oral doses of 10–50 mg of acitretin. A highly sensitive HPLC method was used (2 ng/ml). Residual plasma concentrations of Ro 10-1670 were below the quantification limit in all cases. Residual plasma concentrations of Ro 13-7652 were below the quantification limit in 7 cases and respectively of 3 and 4 ng/ml in the other 2 cases.
