The authors report their experiments with 100 cases of chronic urticaria or angioneurotic aedema. They point out especially the frequency of the allergic background (75% of the cases), the importance of the part played by Candida albicans and the results obtained by the treatment with nystatin (33%of good or very good results) or by desensitization to candidine (49% of good or very good results).It is quite certain that other infections or sensitizations can be responsible, their demonstration and the establishment of a specific treatment can similarly give good results.

The results of a follow-up study comprising 88 patients having 95 basal cell carcinomas treated with 5% 5-fluorouracil ointment are reported. In order to create optimum conditions for the penetration of the antineoplastic agent, the tumor was removed by curettage, and the tumor bed was then treated with fluorouracil ointment under an occlusive dressing for six weeks. The average follow-up period is 44 months. A total of 13 recurrences were found, 12 of which occurred on an average eight months after termination of treatment. The lack of an applicable series of controls is emphasized. It is concluded that, with the technique described, there is hardly any indication for employing 5-fluorouraciI in local treatment of basal cell carcinomas of the skin.

In the literature there is only one report of a fixed drug eruption due to oxyphenbutazone. We are reporting a patient whose fixed drug eruption was caused by oxyphenbutazone and who showed cross-sensitivity to phenylbutazone. There was no history of phenylbutazone having been administered to this patient earlier than the challenging test dose.

A protein fraction precipitated at pH 5.5 from an alkaline extract of human epidermis or stratum corneum was not homogeneous on Sephadex gel filtration. The inhomogeneity was due to aggregation phenomena since polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of all Sephadex fractions gave the same results: a highly-aggregated immobile protein plus two mobile protein bands that represented lower aggregates or subunits. This electrophoretic pattern was found for all the isolated fractions even for fractions with different iso-electrical points (IEP) and from different species. Freshly-ground callus gave essentially the same pattern, indicating that the bands are not artefacts caused by denaturation. The significance for the process of keratinizatíon is discussed

The surface skin lipids were estimated quantitatively (casual level and replacement sum) in 33 subjects using Brun’s osmic acid test and in 14 subjects using Schäfer’s and Kuhn-Bussius’s opaque glass test. Gravimetric estimation of surface lipids were also carried out on symmetrical areas of the upper back using Honsig’s method. It has been generally accepted in the literature that the substituted benzophenones, having wide-spectrum ultraviolet absorbing properties, provide excellent protection from the harmful effects of sunburn. Evidence is here presented which indicates that release of lysosomal acid phosphatase and acid protease was facilitated in cultured human foreskin and rodent skin in vivo after exposure to UV radiation, without protection by 10% sulisobenzone. Under these experimental conditions, there occurred in human foreskin an accelerated leakage of acid phosphatase from membrane-bound sites evidenced by diffuse histochemical staining.
