A 20-year-old man with Sézary-syndrome is presented. This disease is characterized by a generalized, exfoliative dermatitis, a massive enlargement of the superficial lymph nodes and a leukaemic blood count with atypical cells. Histologically the skin changes were similar to mycosis fungoides, the lymph nodes showing non-specific changes. In the peripheral blood with a leucocyte count of 30.000 atypical monocytoid (7%) and lymphocytoid (30%) cells could be differentiated. Electron microscopy revealed large cells with multilobular nuclei in the skin infiltration as well as in the peripheral blood, classified as ‘Sézary cells’. Our experience with pemphigus vulgaris consists of 35 cases. The majority are Jews of Eastern European origin, with an average age of 49.3 years. A daily 40–60 mg of prednisone was effective to initiate remission in most of the cases. Substitution of prednisone by an equivalent dose of triamcinolone avoided further increasing in the dose in 11 of 14 cases. Other regimens of treatment, such as alternate-day therapy, addition of estrogen and of methotrexate, were utilized in some of the patients. They were effective in only a part of the cases and after the disease has been held in remission by the conventional daily therapy. Our data shows that it is adviseable to make allowances for individual reactions on determining the level of initial dosages and when utilizing the other modalities of treatmen

Sixty three cases of vitiligo with multiple vitiliginous patches (VPs), were selected for treatment with topical application of 0.2% of betamethasone 17-valerate in flexible collodion. All cases, excepting ten, responded more or less satisfactorily; while complete cure has been achieved in those cases over the face and neck, other VPs responded variably.

A description is given of a case of hypersensitivity to chromium in a light-blue tattoo. The patient also exhibited a chromium eczema of the hands, just as in most cases of allergic reactions to chromium in green tattoos that have been reported.

The percutaneous absorption rate of trivalent (CrCl3) and hexavalent (Na2CrO4) chromium through excised human and guinea pig whole skin was determined by an isotope method (disappearance measurements). No difference in absorption between the compounds was observed. Thus, the lower absorption of CrCl3, obtained with the same method in vivo, could not be verified. The ratios between the in vivo/in vitro rates for CrCl3 were lower than 1; for Na2CrO4 they were concentration-dependent. The pH changes in chromium solutions after contact with guinea pig skin were greater in vitro than in vivo. Extrapolation of the results to in vivo conditions in man is not considered possible.

A study of 24 patients suffering from cutaneous amyloidosis was made. In 9 cases of 13 studied, an association with diseases of a constitutional or allergic nature such as asthma, neurodermatitis, vasomotor rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis was found. Family studies of 13 of the cases showed the occurrence of diseases of constitutional and allergic nature in the members of 7 families. The findings suggest that cutaneous amyloidosis may be regarded as a constitutional disorder belonging to the group of atopic diseases.

In 4 volunteers samples of skin scrapings taken at various depths on the fore-arms were collected for determination of the urocanic acid, amino-nitrogen, and sodium content. The percentage of urocanic acid in the samples from deeper levels was higher than in the superficial material. The ratio between the amounts of urocanic acid and amino-nitrogen was the same in all layers. It is therefore concluded that the urocanic acid in the human stratum corneum is of epidermal origin and is not derived from sweat.
