This third part of a wider review offers tables with detailed information about cutaneous side-effects of cardiovascular and various other drugs affecting autonomic functions: gastrointestinal, pulmonary, some central nervous, as well as local anesthetics. The drugs capable of inducing lupus erythematosus and other collagen diseases are listed extensively in a special section. Based upon the immune deficiency concept of autoimmune disorders’, the hypothesis is presented that suppression of cellular immunity may be an important step in triggering drug-induced lupus erythematosus. Saline extracts of human dandruff contain a factor, antigen Dd, which precipitates human sera selectively. There is a significant excess (p < 0.001) of antigen Dd reactors among the Punjabi blood donors of India as compared to the blood donors of Poland. Laboratory analysis of assorted hospital sample shows that antibodies to antigen Dd are present more often in autoimmune than in other diseases.

The photoprotective effect of peroral β-carotene medication was evaluated on 66 patients suffering from polymorphous light eruptions. With a dosage of 75 mg/day, 51 of the patients responded favourably, as judged clinically. 55 of the patients noted that their threshold tolerance to sunlight was elevated during β-carotene treatment, in some patients even with a factor of 20–30. The average increase in sun tolerance was with a factor of about 8. The therapeutic effect of β-carotene was dose-dependent. Some degree of sun exposure seemed to be necessary for the photoprotective effect to evolve optimally. The photoprotection gradually became evident in a couple of weeks. Two patients with unilateral facial hyperhidrosis, a rare disorder of the sweat glands, are described. Employing thermal and carbachol stimulation tests, the functional status of sweat glands on the affected sites were studied. A marked increase in sweat gland activity was noted on the affected areas as compared to the contralateral normal sites. The histological examination of the affected skin revealed considerable enlargement of the sweat glands with dilatation of the sweat ducts and an intense mononuclear infiltrate in the periductal area. The epidermis, at places, showed spongiform vesiculation invaded by an identical inflammatory infiltrate. The striking histological resemblance of this condition to the dyshidrotic eruption commonly encountered on the hands and the feet is stressed.

The paper describes a case corresponding clinically and histologically to annular atrophic plaques of the face and resembling lichen sclerosus et atrophicus, morphea, and discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). Immunopathological investigations were twice negative but afterwards revealed profuse immunoglobulin and complement deposits at the epidermal-dermal junction in the lesions both of the face and scalp, which became involved only lately. Raynaud’s syndrome of considerable intensity and then incipient abortive acroscleroderma without systemic involvement developed in the course of the 10 years of observation. A rapidly necrotizing leukemic skin infiltrate appeared simultaneously with a fatal blastic crisis in a patient with chronic erythroleukemia. Local X-ray irradiation and systemic cytotoxic, antibiotic and corticosteroid treatment were of no avail.
