By means of the fibrin slide technique and the extraction method with potassium thiocyanate in epidermal cells of the human skin and of the bovine oesophagus a fibrinolytic activity caused by tissue activators was demonstrated. The content of tissue activators is 5 to 10 times smaller in the human epidermis than in the whole cutis (corium and epidermis).

This paper reports the use of Lamprene (clofazimine) in 6 patients suffering from long-standing lepromatous or borderline leprosy (average duration 17 years) who were intolerant of both dapsone and thiambutosine. The skin lesions improved and reactions decreased in every patient except one. A case of severe polyneuritis responded favourably. Tolerance to dapsone was temporarily increased and steroid dependence reduced. The clinical improvement was matched by the bacteriological one, the morphological index falling to zero within 7 months. No indication of resistance to Lamprene was seen and no side-effects were noted, except a ruddy or slate-grey discoloration of the skin.

Reactive perforating collagenosis is a recently-recognized entity, in which a series of epidermal changes lead to elimination of altered collagen bundles through the transepidermal route. Clinically the disease is manifested by the appearance of asymptomatic papules which develop a central umbilication and then disappear spontaneously in 6–8 weeks. A necrobiotic change of collagen in response to trauma in genetically-predisposed individuals is considered to be of etiologic significance. Murine lepromas were fixed in a phosphate-buffered 5% glutaraldehyde solution and then postfixed in a phosphate-buffered 1% OsO4 solution. Specimens were dehydrated and embedded in Epon 812. In this preparation, the fine structure of the bacilli was clearly observed. An opaque coating substance was observed around each bacillus. This substance is probably not only lipid, but also protein in nature.

9 patients with acquired solitary nodules on the hands and 8 others with similar lesions on the oral mucosa are described together. The commonest sites of involvement were the palm and palmar aspects of the fingers and the tongue; in general they were asymptomatic. Histologically the lesions contained young connective tissue and the view is expressed that they represent a reaction to minor trauma.
