Mononuclear blood cells from 19 patients with psoriasis were stained with a panel of monoclonal antibodies which detect total T lymphocytes, their helper/inducer and suppressor/cytotoxic subsets and Ia-positive lymphocytes and monocytes. Fluorescence-positive cells were enumerated by cell flow cytometry. In these patients, percentages of all mononuclear cell studies were within reference range with few, sporadic exceptions. Statistical analysis of data showed no significant differences between patient values and reference values from a panel of 100 normal subjects.

A defined general population of 159,200 male and female native Swedes born in the period of 1911–1940, from an urban catchment area of the then only general hospital, was followed over a decade (1970–1979) with regard to inpatient hospitalization for all kinds of diagnoses. Psoriasis cases (n = 372) are significantly (p < 0.001) associated with a spectrum of diseases: male as well as female psoriatics seem to show excess rates of viral infections, alcoholism, hypertension, pneumonia, liver cirrhosis, urticaria, and rheumatoid arthritis. In a 54-year-old male patient suffering from Hodgkin’s disease, lymphomatoid papulosis occurred. Complete clearing of the skin lesions was observed immediately after intravenously administered acyclovir. The patient had numerous relapses of his skin eruption with complete responses after each course of intravenously applied acyclovir. This striking therapeutic effect parallels reports of regression of mycosis fungoides and chronic generalized lymphadenopathy after acyclovir application. The mode of action of acyclovir in these disorders is not known. They all are characterized by involvement of the T cell system, and in all these diseases, a virus etiology has been proved or is suggested. Thus, a specific effect of acyclovir on T lymphocytes or selectively on helper T cells is discussed. Alternatively, the virustatic effect of acyclovir could be responsible for the therapeutic succes

Auranofin (AF), an oral gold salt, was given for 9–18 months to 3 patients with pemphigus vulgaris. Fixed eruptions are unusual in children. The classical type is easy to recognize, the generalized bullous variety is however often misdiagnosed. In the present study, 23 children with fixed eruptions were studied; of these, 8 had the generalized bullous type. Provocation tests were done in each case to identify the causative drugs. Acetylsalicylic acid (39%) was the commonest drug incriminated. The patients responded well to systemic steroids.

A 16-week double-blind study of parallel groups was carried out in the treatment of 152 patients suffering from stable psoriasis vulgaris. Podophyllotoxin was applied once daily at three different concentrations in an ointment base, namely 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5%. One stable psoriatic lesion was selected and monitored during the study course.
