After we could demonstrate amyloid deposits both histochemically and ultrastructurally in the papillary body of typical skin lesions in 1 patient with ‘papillomatose papuleuse confluente et réticulée’ Gougerot-Carteaud (PCR), 2 other patients of our clinic already known to suffer from PCR were reinvestigated. Here, too, a similar amyloid storage was noted. In this paper, possible hypotheses concerning the etiopathology of these new results are proposed and the nosological significance of our findings is discussed, i.e. the PCR might lose its identification as a distinct pathological entity by the fact that 3 cases with the clinical picture of PCR can be subsumed under the nosological entity of primary localized skin amyloi

The phenomenon reported here was observed in 2 cases of purpura pigmentosa progressiva and in a case of experimental pityriasis of the guinea pig. Erythrocytes were seen within the epidermis by light microscopy, and these were seen within the keratinocytes by electron microscopy. These observations establish the phagocytosis of erythrocytes by keratinocytes in reaction to a dermal inflammation and/or an epidermal hyperplasia. It is of a special interest for the understanding of the dermoepidermal interrelationship.

The case report is presented of a psoriatic patient with arthropathy, generalised pustular psoriasis and nephrotic syndrome, in whom systemic amyloidosis developed. The literature reports 13 cases of psoriasis associated with amyloidosis, 3 of whom suffered from pustular psoriasis as does our case. With the addition of our case, 12 of these 14 had concomitant arthropathy. This seems to suggest that arthritis is an important factor in the appearance of amyloidosis. Rectal biopsy and/or renal biopsy may be helpful in establishing the diagnosis of amyloidosis relatively early in patients with psoriatic arthritis.

We hereby present a case report of a patient suffering from lichen planus and who, while under treatment with isoniazide, developed skin lesions and serologic abnormality which were typical of lupus erythematosus. Laboratory data and course of the disease indicate that drugs play a role in the pathogenesis of the disease. The nature of relationship between lichen planus and lupus erythematosus is discussed.

A 65-year-old patient developed nonpruritic purpuric skin eruptions following 10 days of coumadin treatment. Skin biopsy revealed vasculitis and immunofluorescent studies demonstrated the presence of IgM and C3 deposits in the walls of the affected blood vessels. Rechallenge with coumadin was followed by reappearance of the skin eruptions. Indirect mast cell degranulation test and migration inhibiting factor test were positive in the presence of coumadin. These findings strongly suggest that the skin lesions were induced by an immunologic reaction to warfarin.

Adult patients having systemic scleroderma with generalized morphea-like skin lesions, whom we had examined during the past 7 years, were reexamined because their clinical features were somewhat similar to those of occupational scleroderma described hitherto. The effect of spironolactone in a low dose (50 mg/day) on hirsutism in 21 women was investigated in an open study. A beneficial effect of treatment was obtained in 15 patients (71%).

A 2-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of cimetidine in the treatment of chronic, plaque-type psoriasis. 24 patients completed the trial (11 treated with cimetidine, 13 with placebo). 3 patients in the cimetidine group and 10 in the placebo group improved. This difference is significant (p < 0.01). Cimetidine had to be discontinued in 2 patients because of side effects. In this study, cimetidine proved of no benefit in the treatment of psoriasis. Furthermore, our results suggest the possibility of an adverse effect of cimetidine in psoriasis.

A randomized trial with 146 psoriatic patients studied the relative merits of (1) oral etretinate (daily dose approximately 1 mg/kg body weight); (2) 0,1% betamethasone valerate cream twice daily, and (3) a combination of treatments 1 and 2. The combined treatment was the best and betamethasone valerate alone was on the whole inferior.

A girl with unilateral partly depigmented partly hyperpigmented atrophic skin lesions, cataracts, optic glioma, and mental retardation is presented. Differential-diagnostic aspects are discussed. It remains to be seen whether this case represents a variant of the epidermal nevus syndrome, an unusual type of X-linked dominant chondrodysplasia punctata or a separate nosological entity.
