A variety of benign squamous epithelial lesions of the mucosa are associated with human papiUomaviruses (HPV). Recently virus-specific DNA was also detected in oral invasive carcinomas. In sections of 373 formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded samples taken from benign and precancerous leukoplakias and squamous cell carcinomas, HPV DNA could be identified in 56 specimens by in situ hybridization technique. The biological significance of viruses of the HPV group in the carcinogenesis of oral epithelial lesions is still unknown.

Clofazimine, at concentrations within the therapeutic range (0.01–5 μg/ml), stimulated human polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) to generate increased amounts of reactive oxidants (RO) when activated with the tripeptide leucoattractant N-formyl-L-methionyl-L-leucyl-L-phenylalanine (FMLP), calcium ionophore, phorbol myristate acetate and opsonised zymosan. Clofazimine per se did not activate the membrane-associated oxidative metabolism of PMNL, but rather primed these cells to hyperreact to the various stimuli. To investigate the therapeutic significance of these observations clofazimine was administered to patients with various chronic inflammatory diseases (lichen planus, discoid lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis) and generation of RO by FMLP-activated phagocytes was measured before and during clofazimine administration. A statistically significant potentiation of RO generation by FMLP-activated phagocytes was observed during clofazimine administration. As shown by an immunohistological study, the endothelial cells in the lesions of port-wine stains (PWSs), investigated for factor VΠI-related antigen and Ulex europaeus agglutinin I lectin, were found to be swollen or flattened corresponding to mild or pronounced dilatation of vessels, respectively. Furthermore, dilated vessels in the lesional skin exhibited a broader staining for type IV collagen, laminin and fibronectin, which, however, was not considered to be of primary pathogenetic importance for vessel dilatation in PWSs. As concluded from the number of vessels, no vascular proliferation occurred, which indicates that PWS is not a true hemangioma but a special clinical type of telangiectasia

Four members of a South African Black family who have palmoplantar keratoderma with amyotrophy are reported. No neuromuscular defects have been found and the muscle thinning appears to result from disuse atrophy. Volar hyperhidrosis, nail abnormalities and in 2 cases knuckle pads, were additional features. The condition appears to be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. We are not aware of a similar syndrome having been previously reported.

A 16-year-old female had a chronic cutaneous eruption clinically characterized by papules, pustules and large exudating plaques of 2 years duration. Multiple biopsies showed infiltration of the follicular epithelium by eosinophils and intraepidermal pustules with neutrophils and eosinophils that were accompanied either by acantholysis or spongiosis. Eosinophilia and hypoproteinemia were detected. A definite infectious etiology or autoimmune mechanism could not be established. Differential diagnosis with other entities that share some clinico-pathological and immunological features are discussed.

Symptomatic involvement of the oesophageal mucosa by pemphigus vulgaris is rare. We describe 1 patient who was treated with oral steroids during a blistering phase, when epigastric pain developed. Endoscopy revealed multiple ulcerations all over the oesophagus, but gastroduodenal mucosa was normal. The symptoms disappeared following cimetidine for gastro-oesophageal reflux and increase of steroid dosage. When painful symptoms appear from the upper digestive tract during corticosteroid treatment of pemphigus, the possibility of acantholytic involvement of oesophageal mucosa must be kept in mind. Its implication for the dosage of steroids is opposite that in steroid-induced peptic ulcers. Carefully performed upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy is helpful in these patients.
