25 patients known or suspected to be allergic to different Compositae plants were tested epicutaneously with ether extracts of different Compositae species. 14 persons revealed a chrysanthemum hypersensitivity, 2 were allergic to arnica and 2 to camomile. In 1 patient a positive reaction to tansy was obtained. In the case of the chrysanthemum allergy, this was induced occupationally. All other patients had sensitized themselves by non-occupational contact. Cross-reactions were seen to tansy [14], yarrow [11], camomile [10], arnica and sunflower [5]. The components which are responsible for the sensitization as well as for the cross-reactions are sesquiterpene lactones.

Dermatophytes invade hosts when their state is suitable for the production of their pathogenicity. When the host’s resistance is reduced, the prevalence of dermatophytoses can be extremely high or the symptomatology can be very unusual. It is suspected that the ‘maladie dermatophytique’ and perhaps dermatophytic mycetoma develop in such situations. This in vitro study investigates the phagocytosis and killing rate of Candida albicans blastospores and germ tubes by polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Suspensions of C. albicans blastospores and germ tubes were incubated for 60 and 150 min with a neutrophil suspension. The rate of phagocytosis was found to be 92 ± 3% for blastospores, but only 9.5 ± 2.5% for germ tubes. The candidacidal activity rate was 29 ± 6% for blastospores, but only 5.5 ± 1.5% for germ tubes. Electronmicroscopically, cytoplasmic and plasma membrane alterations of phagocytized yeast cells lying in phagosomes were observed. Short germ tubes surrounded by a phagosomal membrane were found in neutrophils. Older, longer germ tubes were seen in an extracellular position. Usually, several neutrophils were adjacent to these long tubes. Obviously phagocytosis could not take place owing to the size of the germ tubes. The etiologic agents of human mycoses are discussed in taxonomic order. Some fungal genera are used as examples to describe the general genetical behavior of the various groups. Special features of probable genetical and etiological relevance are mentioned.

Sera from 46 patients with malignant melanoma (MM) in different clinical stages and from 25 healthy blood donors were studied by an indirect conventional immunofluorescent technique (IIT) and by an immunofluorescent complement-fixation test (ICFT). No specific and reliable serological reactivity could be demonstrated against autologous and homologous MM and other nonmalignant pigmented tissues. An increased incidence of diffused antinuclear (ANA; 41%) and cytoplasmic epidermal cell autoantibodies (A-CYT; 71%) was observed in the patients by IIT. Statistical evaluation of the results gave significant values in the χ2 test in patients for ANA (χ2 = 5.2061; p < 0.05) and for A-CYT (χ2 = 8.9176; p < 0.01) versus age-matched controls. Thyroid microsomal, gastric parietal cell, smooth muscle and mitochondria autoantibodies were, respectively, detected in 4.3, 4.3, 4.3 and 0% of patients’

The pathogen species involved in medical and veterinary mycology can be divided into three categories according to their level of increasing adaptation to parasitism. Only the third category includes a few species (some dermatophytes) which can be regarded as genuine parasites. The opportunistic fungi belong to the first or the first two the three categories according to the given definition. The various possible factors of preadaptation or adaptation to parasitic life (physical factors, biochemical factors, avoidance of the immunological pressure and ecological factors) are discussed. Except for the species belonging to the first category they probably are efficient only if the host does not react normally.

A solitary scrotal lesion of isolated epidermolytic acanthoma was studied by optical microscopy. The lesion displayed typical granular degeneration. The tumor parenchyma comprised several foci extending deep in the cutis to the continuation of the invaginated epithelium. Serial sections showed the parenchyma was free from acrosyringium and epidermis proper. The findings with hematoxylin-eosin stain and Fontana-Masson stain indicated that the tumor had originated from portion B of the hair follicle.

As most of the pathogenic fungi, opportunistic fungi have a saprophytic life in the soil. The knowledge of their life in natural conditions may allow to avoid their proliferation in the vicinity of man. Examples of ecology were taken among Aspergilli and mycetoma-inducing fungi. The ecology of these fungi was studied in Senegal-Mauritania where mycetoma is fairly frequent and well studied. Cultures of L. senegalensis and L. tompkinsii were very often isolated from dry thorns of acacias or other thorn trees. M. mycetomi, the most frequent mycetoma-inducing fungus, was very difficult to culture from wood or soil specimens. A special selective sulphide medium had to be used. Some strains of M. mycetomi were isolated from specimens taken off the surface of termitaria.

In a previous study we found that clavicular lesions in chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) in young patients was associated with palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP). In this work the relationship between sternoclavicular lesions and PPP was studied in a group of adult patients. The sternoclavicular region of 52 patients with PPP and 25 control persons was examined by tomography. Among the PPP patients there were inflammatory lesions in the sternal synchondroses in 3 patients. There were no such lesions in the controls. In this unselected population of adult patients there was thus no definite association between PPP and sterno-clavicular lesions. In young patients on the other hand, CRMO with clavicular lesions may be another, probably noninfectious, cause of PPP.

A 75-year-old woman had lichenoid and bullous lesions in the sun-exposed areas. She had a history of cerebral embolism and received chlorpromazine (CPZ) until consultation at our clinic. Patch tests with CPZ were negative, but photopatch tests were positive at relatively high concentrations of CPZ and ultraviolet light radiation sites of 310, 340 and 370 nm. Rapid improvement of the lesions occurred upon discontinuation of CPZ and the avoidance of exposure to sunlight. From these results, the patient was considered to show lichenoid eruptions due to CPZ phototoxicity rather than photoallergy.
