The effect of plasma and serum on the photohaemolysis of red cells from erythropoietic protoporphyria patients was studied. Low concentrations (up to 50–100 ml/l) markedly inhibited the rate of photohaemolysis, this effect being partially reversed at higher plasma concentrations. Most of the lysis-inhibiting material co-eluted with serum albumin on gel filtration columns, although a considerable inhibiting effect was also associated with higher molecular weight material. A significant part of the albumin effect can be ascribed to its protoporphyrin-binding capacity. However, most of the effect seems due to an as yet unidentified property of this protein. Irradiation of fibroblasts in culture at 365 nm produces perinuclear halos which can be seen by visible microscopy. The role of superoxide radical anions in this process (possibly via photoreduction of endogenous flavins followed by reoxidation by molecular oxygen) is suggested since addition of superoxide dismutase (probably membrane bound) completely inhibits formation of the halos.

By means of biotyping we have investigated 150 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from people with dermatologic complaints. We have used six main and three additional biotyping tests. The strains under investigation did not form a closed biotype, on the contrary, they showed a certain biotype plurality. The determination of protein A in 150 strains of S. aureus isolated from dermatologic processes of men, 15 strains of S. aureus of bovine origin and 50 strains of Staphylococcus with negative coagulase activity have brought the following results: all strains of S. aureus of skin origin (human strains) contain protein A in various quantities keeping within 2–64 U. Ultrastructural and biochemical studies of the dermis from patients with pseudoxanthoma elasticum are described. Elastin fibers showed mineral deposits that were associated with an elastin material exhibiting altered affinity for the electron microscopical stains and altered ultrastructural organization. In the most affected patient the elastin was shown to be increased and to have an abnormal amino acid composition. In some patients the collagen fibers were laterally fused. The ground substance was increased as evidenced by electron microscopy and confirmed by a slight increase in uronic acids, hexosamines, and neutral sugars.

The association of HLA antigens with pemphigus in Jewish patients of various ethnic origins was investigated. Of 45 Ashkenazi patients, 31 (68.6%) had A26 (p < 10––5) and 32 (71.7%) had BW38 (p < 10––5). Among the 11 non-Ashkenazi patients, 7 (63.6%) had A26 and only 1 had BW38. The question whether the antigen A26 or BW38 is linked with the disease is discussed. Our findings may suggest that the primary association of pemphigus is with A26. This association may be stronger in Jewish male patients than in females. In view of the recent literature and our results it may be presumed that pemphigus in Jews is associated with antigens of Loci A and DR. Six different vehicles for topical use were used to prepare 50% dilutions of Betnovate® (betamethasone 17-valerate, 0.1%) cream. Blanching assessment was undertaken immediately after preparing the various dilutions and at 1 and 3 months thereafter. Few statistically significant differences were noted between any of the preparations tested indicating that the rate of release of betamethasone 17-valerate is relatively unaffected by dilution. All preparations were assayed by a stability indicating high pressure liquid chromatographic technique for corticosteroid content. A diminution in the content of betamethasone 17-valerate in the E45 dilution was found 14 months after preparation. All other formulations tested were found to comply with label claim specifications

Epithelioma cuniculatum, a rare form of squamous cell carcinoma affecting the sole of the foot, was observed in 2 male patients aged 62 and 69 years, respectively. In each case the lesion consisted of a fungating mass with sinuses draining foul-smelling fluid with keratin debris.

The unusual ultrastructure of a metastatic malignant melanoma is discussed. Light microscopy revealed most tumor cells to be nonpigmented, multinucleated giant cells. Electron microscopy demonstrated bizarre, cytoplasmic filaments void of melanin deposition. The internal structure of these filaments exhibited distinct periodicity similar to that seen in normal melanosomes.

The HLA locus A, B and C antigen frequency of 70 unrelated Chinese patients with psoriasis were compared to that of 330 normal subjects. The frequency of Al, Aw30 and B13 were significantly elevated among patients compared to normals, even after correction for the number of antigens typed for. The joint occurrence of Aw30, B13 was observed in 20/70 (37.1%) patients compared to 8/330 (2.4%) normals (χ2 = 60.7, RR = 16.1). 12 patients with digital ischaemia due to collagen vascular disease were treated with repeated infusions of low molecular weight dextran at intervals from 5 to 6 weeks. The patients were followed clinically and by capillary microscopy. In 5 patients an increased capillary blood flow was seen by capillary microscopy. The clinical changes consisted of a lower number of ulcers in 5 of 9 patients with ulcers and a reduction of cold intolerance in 8 of the 12 patients studied. 4 patients had no improvement at all from the treatment. A determination of dextran-reactive antibodies was also performed.
