Treponema pallidum and HIV are both sexually transmitted agents of infectious diseases with epidemiological similarities. Ulcerous genital diseases such as primary syphilis facilitate transmission of HIV. An increasing number of case reports gives evidence that in HIV-infected patients secondary syphilis runs a more severe course and may present as syphilis maligna and that neurological complications of secondary and tertiary syphilis seem to occur more frequently and at an earlier stage. The clinical evaluation, interpretation of serology and choice of treatment schedules must take these considerations into account.

S-carboxymethylated (SCM) fibrous proteins from the scalp hair of a patient with hypotrichosis with keratosis pilaris (HTKP) and from that of a normal individual were analyzed using two-dimensional electrophoresis. One SCM fibrous protein component was different electrophoretically in the HTKP patient. It is suggested that the brittleness of the HTKP hair might result from this alteration of the fibrous protein composition of the hair.

In 939 schoolchildren aged 8–16 years skin complexion was determined by a system of seven categories. Anamnestic data concerning tanning ability and history of sunburns, however, were not considered owing to their obvious unreliability in children. Mean nevus count was 17.97 was significantly higher in boys than in girls and increased with age. There was a clear relation of mean nevus number and skin complexion: in fair skin type nevi are most frequent decreasing in number by increasing of pigment content. Additionally, children with freckles have higher mean nevus count in every category of skin complexion. All literature data critically reviewed as dealing with mean mole count are not comparable in several respects. A controlled, randomized, double-blind, crossover study was performed in 10 healthy volunteers to compare changes of cutaneous blood flow values (CBFV) determined by laser Doppler flowmetry before and after intake of a capsule containing either 10 mg cetirizine or 60 mg terfenadine. After the determination of the initial response to the anti-H1 agents, drugs were taken daily (cetirizine 10 mg, terfenadine 120 mg) over a 3-week period and the cutaneous response to histamine and saline was evaluated weekly, exactly 4 h after the last drug intake.The following significant variations were observed (analysis of variance for repeated measurements, p < 0.05): (1) there is a decrease of histamine-induced wheal and flare under antihistamines (anti-H1), cetirizine being more potent than terfenadine; (2) CBFV, measured on the usual flare area, i.e. at 1 cm of the site of agonist injection, decreased after drug intake. There was a gradual increase of the CBFV inhibition over the 3-week follow-up, cetirizine being more effective than terfenadine, and (3) at the site of agonist injection, reduction of the edematous wheal was associated with significant increases of CBFV after drug intake. This quantitative pharmacologic in vivo assay on the agonist action indicates that at lower doses, cetirizine has a significantly higher anti-H1 activity than terfenadine and that this effect is maintained over a 3-week period. There was no tachyphylaxis.

The authors report the case of a 64-year-old female with a pemphigus vulgaris that relapsed on her left cheek following X-irradiation. The lesion developed not only on the irradiated area but also along a linear streak. Blaschko lines seem to represent the linear systematization pattern more likely to account for this unusual distribution.

Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma represents a very peculiar dermatosis with distinctive microscopic features. It is associated with paraproteinemia and quite often with myeloma : it is a good marker of medullary dysfunction or degeneration. The pathogenesis of cutaneous granulomas remains highly speculative: distorted interaction of histiocytes and lymphocytes-plasmocytes and influence of immune complexes. So far, chlorambucil appears as the most interesting drug.

For the first time, cutaneous dryness and ichthyosis-like aspects are noted in a baby afflicted with Goldenhar’s syndrome. Cardiopulmonary malformations are frequently described in those cases of oculo-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia (DOAV). A florid form of this syndrome is reported and the most important symptoms commented upon. Generally sporadic, the syndrome is, except in few cases, not genetically transmitted; it is thought to be closely related to the first or the two first branchial arch syndrome

The frequent occurrence of skin cancers in immunocompromised people is illustrated by two observations: kidney-grafted patients, treated with classical immunosuppressive drugs, developed with increasing frequency keratotic lesions and carcinomas (most often spindle cell carcinomas) on the sun-exposed areas. Difficulties in diagnosis and treatment and the high rate of recurrence and metastatis is stressed. In a third patient, a Kaposi sarcoma spread rapidly under combined treatment with ciclosporin and usual immunosuppressive agents. Recent literature dealing with skin cancers and combined immunosuppressive treatment is reviewed. The role of the dermatologist in the prevention, early diagnosis and management of these neoplasms proves primordial.
