Electron microscopic studies were made in 11 cases of benign epithelial tumors (common warts, seborrheic warts, and papilloma) and malignant ones (Bowen’ disease and basal cell epithelioma). 147 liver biopsies were performed in 79 patients with severe psoriasis, 18 patients with Parkinson’s disease, and post mortem in 42 patients following sudden death from cardiac failure or traffic accident. 47 of the biopsies in psoriatics were performed prior to treatment with methotrexate. 40 biopsies were taken during treatment. A high incidence of pathological findings were found in both groups of psoriatics. Fatty metamorphosis, periportal inflammation, and focal necroses were found in statistically higher degree among psoriatics than among controls. It is suggested that besides being due to presence of obesity, drug exposure, and alcohol intake, liver pathology in psoriatics may be associated with the disease itself. In one patient, the appearance of superficial skin metastases of melanoma was not modified by scarification with vaccinia vaccine. Regression was observed after topical application of 2,4-dinitrochloro-benzene which resulted in complete clearing of the tegument which had persisted for over 2 years. Histological examination of some of the regressing lesions revealed infiltration by mononuclear cells and eosinophils as well as the disappearance of the neoplastic melanocytes.

Low titers of antibodies reactive with an antigen present in the intercellular (IC) areas and basement-membrane zone (BMZ) of stratified squamous epithelium were observed in the serum of 26% (11 of 42) and 7% (3 of 42) patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy, respectively, by the method of indirect immunofluorescence (IF). IC IF staining could be differentiated from similar IF patterns which are obtainable with sera from individuals with high titers of blood group isohemagglutinins by their stability following absorption with blood group-specific substances A and B. The finding of BMZ antibodies was particularly interesting in view of the suggested association of manifestations of bullous pemphigoid and the occurrence of internal malignancy.

A tumor showing features of both trichoepithelioma and apocrine adenoma is reported. The combined manifestation of these two neoplasms may be explained by their common origin from the primary epithelial germ or the pkiripotentiality of the epidermal cells.

Histological and electron microscopic examination has been carried out on the biopsies from a patient with histiocytosis gigantocellularis. The following findings have been observed. (1) The cells of histiocytosis gigantocellularis have characteristic granules of different size, form, and electron density, mostly showing a lamellar structure, as well as a membranous limit. These granules are probably synthetized within the cells. Their chemical composition and function are unknown. (2) Similarity between the electron-dense granules and those of Merkel’ cells, as well as the richness of unmyelinic nerve fibers in the immediate environment of the granuloma cells are discussed. Desmosomal structures have not been observed, but there are many cytoplasmic processes which are cogged in labyrinth-like fashion, partly forming a membranous complex. (3) The fine structure of the nucleolus, a well-developed endoplasmic reticulum, as well as a large amount of microfibrils and intracellularly localized collagen fibrils are features of fibroblasts, and may possibly be a transition stage of the granuloma cells. It is supposed that granuloma cells represents a degree of differentiation between reticulum cells and fibroblasts on the one hand and histiocytes (macrophages) on the other. Enlarged hollows are interpreted as a phagocytotic phenomenon of storing of lipids. (4) The nature of the stimulus leading to the formation of systematized giant cell granuloma is thus far unknow

摘要:

A special form of scleredema, confined to adults with severe and complicated diabetes mellitus, has come to be recognized. It lasts for an indefinite period of time, without tendency to spontaneous remission. The name diabetic scleredema is proposed for this form. Two such patients are presented and the literature on the subject is reviewed. We believe that diabetic scleredema should be added to the list of conditions complicating or in any way associated with diabetes mellitus.
