Using cervical smears obtained as part of routine gynaecological examinations, a retrospective study of the effects of the drug tamoxifen on squamous epithelial maturation of the cervix of post‐menopausal women being treated for advanced breast cancer was made. The degree of squamous epithelial maturation was quantitated by using the Maturation Index and the Maturation Value. Although tamoxifen is a synthetic, non‐steroidal compound classified as anti‐oestrogenic, the findings indicate that this drug commonly produces a level of squamous maturation indicative of oestrogenic stimulation in Papanicolaou stained cervical smears from post‐menopausal patients receiving this drug. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) was performed on 52 patients with salivary gland lesions. A definitive cytodiagnosis was possible in 45 cases: a sensitivity of 89% and a specificity of 94% was achieved. The pitfalls of FNAC of salivary gland lesions are reflected by the false positive and false negative rates which were 4%. Errors of cytodiagnosis are due to the morphological variability of these tumours which make sampling and interpretation difficult.

Nucleolar organizer region associated proteins (AgNOR proteins) have been identified by means of an argyrophil technique in smears of 60 consecutive fine needle aspirates from lung tumours. AgNOR proteins were visualized as silver‐positive granules distributed in loose, intranuclear aggregates. Variations in the number as well as differences in the distribution pattern of AgNOR granules were found among different types of tumours. Except for small cell lung carcinoma, the count of AgNOR granules increased when the differentiation of tumours decreased. In particular well differentiated tumours had relatively few AgNOR granules, distributed in cohesive aggregates. Poorly differentiated tumours had many AgNOR granules organized in loose clusters and small cell lung carcinoma had relatively few granules dispersed throughout the nucleoplasm, showing characteristics unique among all lung neoplasms. The application of the AgNOR technique in cyto‐preparations is useful in discriminating between small cell and non‐small cell lung carcinomas. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the breast is widely used in the diagnosis of breast carcinoma. In some centres this is sometimes the only diagnostic procedure performed prior to definitive treatment. A grading system based on cytology would be helpful in the selection of patients for appropriate therapy. The aim of this study, therefore, was to devise such a system for grading breast carcinoma based on cytological features alone.The features assessed were the degree of cell clustering, nuclear pleomorphism, nuclear diameter, the presence of multiple, easily visible nucleoli and necrosis. Cytological features were compared to the histological grade of the tumours following excision. Discriminant analysis showed that the features with the closest correlation with histological grade were nuclear diameter, nuclear pleomorphism and the presence of nucleoli. A scoring system based on these three parameters enabled the classification of tumours into high and low cytological grades which showed a close correlation with histological grade.

To study the cytomorphology of Ki‐1 (CD‐30) positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma, imprints and fine needle aspirates from a total of 20 of these tumours were collected. The results show that these tumours have a highly pleomorphic and variable picture, which can be easily confused with other poorly differentiated large cell tumours. Typical morphological differences between the B‐cell and T‐cell variety were found. B‐cell tumours more often showed nuclear multilobation, a fine, hypochromatic chromatin pattern, and many lymphoglandular bodies. T‐cell tumours more often displayed multinucleation, window nuclei, and a hyperchromatic coarse chromatin pattern. The diagnosis of anaplastic large cell Ki‐1 positive lymphoma, B‐cell type or T‐cell type, should be included in the differential diagnosis of any large cell tumour of uncertain origin with mainly dissociated tumour cells. Between 1970 and 1987,20 028 fine needle aspirates (FNA) of the thyroid have been examined in the Department of Pathology of the University of Innsbruck, Austria. During this period 92 cases of anaplastic carcinoma and 16 cases of malignant haemangioendothelioma (MHE) of the thyroid were diagnosed. Forty‐three out of these 108 highly malignant tumours of the thyroid underwent FNA pre‐operatively (39.1%). Thirty‐seven FNA contained numerous cells of a highly malignant tumour. Five specimens (11.8%) contained only necrotic material and inflammatory cells. In one case of an anaplastic carcinoma no malignant cells could be demonstrated in FNA. We conclude that pre‐operative FNA of highly malignant thyroid tumours may contribute substantially to subsequent clinical man
