SummaryA study has been made of the microbiology of rock surfaces and weathered stones. Increasing numbers of micro‐organisms were found with increasing degree of colonization by lichens, for example, of rock surfaces. The highest numbers were generally found in‘raw’ soil in rock crevices where the organic‐matter content was high. Bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi were also found in the interior of porous weathered stones but not in unweathered stones. SummaryThe reactions of variscite, AlPO4·2H2O, and of strengite, FePO4·2H2O, with dilute aqueous solutions have been investigated. Particular attention has been given to the effects of time of reaction, pH of solution, and the solution/solid ratio. Thermodynamic solubility constants are maintained only at low pH values, viz.:Surface hydrolysis reactions occur at higher pH values, releasing phosphate ions into solution and forming more basic insoluble metal phosphates. SummaryRainfall was measured at an open site and under spruce, pine, and heather. Between 50 and 60 per cent. of the rain penetrated each of the canopies. Variations in the percentage penetration are associated with the area of foliage to be wetted and with the aggregate amount and the intensity of the rainfall.

SummaryThe oxidation of soil organic matter by hydrogen peroxide is shown to be incomplete, the resistant organic materials causing sharp exothermic reactions at 300–340°C. during differential thermal analysis in an atmosphere of oxygen. Removal of the materials responsible for these exothermic reactions by treatments with sodium dithionite, sodium pyrophosphate, and acetylacetone followed by determination of iron in the acetylacetone extracts shows that iron is responsible for the stability of the organic materials, which are probably artefacts produced during the oxidative degradation of the soil organic matt

SummaryThe termpedotubulesis proposed for a group of pedological features which have a tubular external form and which are distinguished from cutans (Brewer, 1960a) by their complex internal composition and fabric. Pedotubules are classified according to their internal fabric and composition, details of external form, distinctness, and by a comparison of their fabric and composition with that of the horizons of the soil profile. Their general morphology suggests their origin as voids caused by faunal and floral (root) activity which have been filled, or partially filled, with soil material. Since little is known of the details of the effects of faunal activity on soil materials, such interpretations are tentative.

SummaryMany limitations of conventional methods for determining inorganic soil phosphate have been overcome by employing an isotopic dilution technique. Mobilization of soil inorganic phosphate fractions was achieved by using a solution buffered to pH 1·0 and containing orthophosphate labelled with phosphorus‐32. The inorganic phosphate thus mobilized was determined after the attainment of equilibrium between the applied and soil phosphate.
