We have used a cloned chicken collagen cDNA sequence to help identify hypothetic members of the collagen gene family from Drosophila melanogaster. Several experimental evidences have been obtained which indicate that the Drosophila genome contains numerous collagen‐like sequences. We have characterized in more detail ten distinct DNA sequences that hybridized strongly to the heterologous collagen probe. By in situ hybridization we have shown that these sequences are dispersed throughout the Drosophila genome. Two of them are shown to originate from the previously described DCg 1 and DCg 2 collagen genes. In other respects, we show that in addition to DCg 1 and DCg 2, at least five putative collagen genes are expressed during the Drosophila lifetime. These genes are unique, and some of them are seen to be transcribed into different size classes of mRNAs. The ref(2)P gene is a Drosophila gene which acts on Sigma virus multiplication. From recombination experiments the ref(2)P gene was located between hk and pr. This location was confirmed by the study of eight chromosomic aberrations, without ref(2)P gene activity, obtained following × irradiation. From the cytological study of three of these chromosomes and from the study of the ref(2)P gene activity of chromosomic aberrations obtained by other workers in the same region of the second chromosome, the ref(2)P gene was cytologically located in 37E3‐37

Following PEG (polyethylene glycol) treatment of ovulated metaphase II mouse oocytes aggregated with thymocytes, fusion of cell membranes occurs. Prerequisites for cell fusion are: close apposition of lectin‐agglutinated (phytohemagglutinin‐treated) membranes of both cells, formation of firm punctual adhesion sites, and expansion of adhesion sites over a certain area. Establishment of the firm cell‐cell contact is associated with development of actin‐like filaments along both of the adhering plasma membranes. Membrane fusion occurs at single or multiple sites, and is followed by internalization of thymocyte‐oocyte membrane complexes decorated with actin filaments into the hybrid cell cytoplasm. A filamentous actin layer forms also along the inner surface of newly formed hybrid oocyte‐thymocyte plasma membrane. Thymocyte nuclei incorporated into oocyte cytoplasm undergo nuclear envelope breakdown and premature chromosome condensation (PCC) leading, eventually, to formation of single chromatids complete with kinetochores. Concomitantly with chromatin condensation an extensive polymerization of microtubules starts in the center of the chromatin mass which leads to the formation of an apparently non‐functional spindle

In vivo pulse‐chase labeling of rabbit jejunum loops was used in conjunction with subcellular fractionation and quantitative immunoprecipitation to compare the intracellular transport kinetics of aminopeptidase with that of a 140 kDa brush‐border antigen not belonging to the hydrolase class. As judged by the maturation kinetics of Asn‐linked glycans, these glycoproteins were found to be transported from the endoplasmic reticulum into the Golgi apparatus at different rates (t1/2 = 25–50 min). The transport from the Golgi complex to the brush‐border was rapid and seemed to occur at the same rate for both glycoproteins. The inhibitory effect of sodium arsenite and azide on asialoorosomucoid endocytosis was tested using isolated rat hepatocytes. Under either continuous flux conditions or a single synchronous wave of ligand endocytosis we confirm that azide inhibits the recycling of the receptors and we provide evidence for the involvement of thiol groups in the internalization step. In addition pretreatment of hepatocytes with azide allows us to demonstrate that receptor endocytosis proceeds independently of the presence of any specific ligand.
