Sonography provides a unique method for evaluating peripheral nerves because of its high spatial resolution, its ability to follow structures over long distances in a limb, and its dynamic nature that allows movement of patient and transducer. When combined with the wide availability and relatively low cost, sonography is an excellent modality for peripheral nerve assessment. The authors review the techniques used in assessment of peripheral nerves, the relevant anatomy, and common pathologic processes.

The high risks of monochorionic (MC) twin gestations are largely related to the vascular anatomy of the shared placentae and the presence of intertwin vascular connections. These anastomoses are implicated in twin-twin transfusion syndrome and co-twin sequelae after intrauterine death of one twin. Twin-twin transfusion syndrome is the most common complication of MC twinning. Obstetrical sonography, with the use of Doppler techniques, can be used to assess these high-risk pregnancies and to interrogate the vascular connections in the shared placentae. The information obtained can improve our understanding of the pathophysiology of syndromes that complicate these pregnancies and may help inform obstetrical management.

Sonography is the imaging modality of choice in detecting and characterizing pathologic conditions affecting the extratesticular space. Although most abnormalities are benign, many may simulate or represent malignant processes. Accurate diagnosis is therefore essential and must be based not only on the sonographic findings but also on accurate clinical history and physical examination findings. This article reviews the anatomy, embryologic development, and pathologic conditions affecting the extratesticular space.

Ultrasound of the adolescent female pelvis is the imaging method of choice for most medical problems presenting with symptoms and signs referable to this area. Recognizing the transition from child to mature female and its manifestations are crucial in directing the workup and interpreting the sonographic findings. A description of the normal anatomy and physiology of the pelvic organs is followed by a discussion of the clinical and imaging findings in primary and secondary amenorrhea, pelvic pain, and pelvic masses.
