Summary—Eighty‐eight patients with blunt renal trauma were examined sonographically. Rupture of the kidney was diagnosed in 41 patients and contusion of the kidney in 45. The correlation between operative findings, sonography and urography showed positive sonographic findings to be correct in all patients with rupture of the kidney. In 4 patients with normal sonograms, the diagnosis of a contusion was based on the urographic results. Three patients underwent angiography. An intimal lesion was seen in 2 and a tear of the renal artery in 1.The results of our investigation suggest that sonography should be applied in the first place in the evaluation of blunt renal trauma. Summary—The arterial supply of horseshoe kidneys was studied in 6 anatomical specimens to establish whether there is a risk of haemorrhage when performing percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The anatomy of the collecting system was studied on patients' X‐rays, taken in different planes to obtain a three‐dimensional view.It was found that there is no increased risk of arterial bleeding in horseshoe kidneys compared with normal kidneys. Summary—The use of renal stents in renal transplants is becoming increasingly popular and has been routine practice at this institution for the past 4 years. Despite this procedure, however, obstruction of the transplant ureter still occurs and we describe 7 patients who developed renal obstruction in the presence of a stented transplant ureter. The underlying causes of these findings are discussed together with suggested recommendations for optimum radiological assessment of transplant ureteric stents. Summary—The ureteric diameter on IVU was compared with the MCU findings of reflux or lower urinary tract dysfunction in a group of patients followed up after spinal cord injury. A wide ureter was associated with reflux in 20%, but 8 normal sized ureters on IVU also refluxed—5 of them to a significant degree. In the non‐refluxing group, wide ureters were noted more often in patients whose bladder pressures were high and wildly fluctuating than in those with normal bladder pressures. Similarly, the incidence of reflux was higher in patients with high bladder pressures and wild fluctuations of bladder pressure than in those with normal pressures.While a wide ureter on IVU should arouse suspicion that reflux or lower urinary tract dysfunction might be present, these conditions are not necessarily excluded by the finding of a ureter of normal

Summary—An open, prospective, randomised, comparative study of “Trisdine” and kanamycincolistin bladder instillations in reducing significant bacteriuria during intermittent urethral catheterisation was conducted. Trisdine is an aqueous solution of chlorhexidine gluconate 0.01% with added ethylenediaminetetra‐acetic acid disodium salt and TRIS buffer at final concentrations of 1.34 mMoles and 0.01 Molar respectively. All patients (15 males and 3 females) admitted with acute spinal cord trauma and bladder involvement requiring intermittent catheterisation for more than 5 days during a 12‐month period were studied.There was no significant difference in the mean incidence of significant bacteriuria during intermittent catheterisation in the 7 males who had kanamycin‐colistin bladder instillations compared with the 8 males who had Trisdine instillations. A comparison could not be made in the females because there were only 3 patients. Because Trisdine is more stable at ambient temperatures, is less likely to select antibiotic‐resistant bacteria and is less expensive, it is concluded that Trisdine is preferable to kanamycin‐colistin solution for bladder instillations during intermittent

Summary—The efficacy of 1 mg bumetanide on nocturia was compared with placebo in a randomised double‐blind cross‐over study in general practice. Twenty‐eight patients, 13 females and 15 males, completed two treatment periods of 2 weeks' duration. During the placebo period the weekly number of nocturia episodes was 13.8 and during bumetanide treatment the number was reduced by 3.8. Ten males had a history of prostatic hypertrophy and in these patients treatment with bumetanide was not beneficial. In the remaining 18 patients the weekly number of nocturia episodes was reduced by 4 during bumetanide treatment compared with the placebo period. Of these patients, 3 preferred treatment with placebo, 11 preferred bumetanide and 4 gave no preference.
