For the development of those small quantity applications in which a dedicated microprocessor-based instrument-control system is required, an inexpensive but powerful target system is needed. The IBM-PC/XT computer may be used as an instrument platform driven by software developed in a high-level language and committed to ROM; the final product is operated as a dedicated controller, without disk. The example of a programmable stimulator for physiological applications is presented.

A method for controlled, rapid resistive heating of a graphite filament and tube furnace is presented. The method relies on a five-parameter (two-lump) heat-transfer model and computer control of a triac switch used to deliver ac power to the resistive load. A simple experimental method for obtaining the parameters is presented. Once obtained, the parameters can be used to linearly increase the temperature of the load without feedback. Data for heating rates from 250 to 600 K s−1up to a final temperature of 2700 K are presented. Controlled heating under 1 atm of inert gas and in vacuo have been accomplished. The method should be particularly useful when controlled heating with feedback is difficult to realize.

This paper describes a data system for a custom-built secondary ion mass spectrometer assembled with a microcomputer, plug-in data acquisition and control cards, and a commercial scientific software system. Capabilities and limitations of this system are described.

A modular fluorescence detector with computer data acquisition has been designed and built for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The modular approach provides selectivity that rivals array-based detectors, and the use of photomultiplier tubes gives sensitivity that surpasses them. Up to three modules can be connected, each adding one excitation wavelength and four emission wavelengths. An Apple microcomputer is used for acquisition and analysis of the twelve channels of data.
