摘要:
An IBM 1130 computing system is being used as a data processing unit for a number of mass spectrometers. Interfacing has been developed to allow input to the computer of both digital and analog signals. Provision has been made to accept data on a real-time basis from a mass spectrometer using the cycle-steal technique. Data so accumulated can be stored in the magnetic disk memory until processing is desired. Programs have been written that accumulate the data and process it into a final report. Programs associated with the accumulation of data are written in IBM 1130 Assembly language to facilitate data word manipulation and to allow hardware activation. Processing programs are written in IBM 1130 FORTRAN IV language. These programs provide for the calibration of the mass spectrometer and reduction of the raw data to a meaningful form.

摘要:
An introduction to the use of a small, dedicated digital computer in the field of liquid chromatography is presented. The discussion includes a description of a high-resolution chromatographic system for the analysis of UV-absorbing constituents of body fluids and the on-line computer analysis of chromatographic data. The problems encountered in the application of a computer to chromatographic analyses are considered, and results indicating the usefulness and efficiency of computer-aided chromatographic analyses are presented.

摘要:
The spectrometer system developed in this work consists of a Ge(Li) detector and a 4096-channel multichannel analyzer interfaced directly to a computer with 16,384 24-bit words. The restrictions imposed by a medium-sized core have been circumvented by performing the data reduction in successive steps which are called from a disk file while the data remain in core. Since the analyzer memory is not used to store data during reduction, new data can be acquired while data reduction is in progress.

摘要:
A digital computer has been programmed to do the complete job of finding and measuring each spectral line in an absorption or emission spectrum. The outputs of position, wavenumber or wavelength, log intensity, and shape of each line are similar to those obtained by a skilled operator using a photoelectric comparator, but are more consistent and are obtained much more rapidly. Many data points on each line are used, and precision measurements can be made on lines covering an intensity range of over 103. Many spectra have been processed since the first successful operation in 1962. Continuing improvements to both the apparatus and the computer program are being made. Future plans include a more direct connection to the large digital computer, programmed computer control of the apparatus, computer enhancement of the spectral resolution, and the application to spectrochemical analysis. This system is not limited to optical spectra. Any set of data with peaks or depressions can be processed so as to measure these peaks or depressions. Successful runs have been made on many kinds of spectra.

摘要:
Two FORTRAN computer programs have been written that design mass spectrometers with complete second-order focusing for any magnetic analyzer of fixed radius. These programs make the coefficients B1, B2, and B22of the focusing equation exactly zero by simultaneously solving the proper expressions to satisfy this condition. In the first program, SARCH, regions are sought where the remaining two second-order coefficients, B11and B12change sign. The second program, DFCAL, analyzes these regions of interest in detail. It attempts to make B11and B12smaller than a suitable preset value using a successive approximation technique. When successful, the values of all the physical parameters required to meet these conditions are printed out in tabular form.

摘要:
When using a mass spectrometer to monitor free radical and atom intermediates in rapid gas-phase reactions, identification of the parent species of each ion is made difficult by fragmentation processes that occur at electron energies necessary for optimum ionization cross sections. Molecular beam analysis is a new approach to this problem whereby molecular beam measurements are used to characterize neutral species before they are ionized. Thus, the trajectory of a particle in an inhomogeneous magnetic field shows whether or not it has a large magnetic moment characteristic of a free radical, its motion in an inhomogeneous electric field indicates its symmetry and the magnitude of its electric dipole moment, and its velocity distribution determines its mass when the source temperature is known. Using these techniques, various atom, free-radical, and unstable molecular species have been identified in gases excited by microwave discharge or as products of atom-molecule reactions.

摘要:
A new potentiostat-cell system design for application to the study of very rapid electrochemical processes is described. The potentiostat provides submicrosecond transient response with very high current capability. The cell is constructed such that electrode placement can be determined very accurately and reproducibly. Very-small-diameter Luggin capillary probes have been employed to allow minimum separation between the working electrode and the reference probe, with subsequent minimization of uncompensated resistance. Probe dimensions could be varied conveniently and accurately to obtain specific characteristics. The response characteristics of the potentiostat-cell system were defined and optimized. The potential gradients near the working electrode for high-frequency control signals were measured. Controlled-potential electroanalytical methods were applied to the study of several electrode processes whose behavior could be predicted for rapid experiments.

摘要:
A circuit is described which, when fed with an alternating voltage whose amplitude may vary, produces an accurately settable, continuously variable output amplitude. The error in the output amplitude is within 0.1% for inputs from 3 V to 7 V rms, between 30 Hz and 4 kHz, and within 1% between 16 Hz and 10 kHz. By connection to this inexpensive circuit, any simple, inexpensive audio oscillator is effectively converted into a multirange, precision-amplitude ac source.
