Following some 37 years of service in geophysical fields, Harry Durward Harradon died unexpectedly of coronary thrombosis on December 8, 1949, shortly after his 66th birthday. On September 30, 1949, he was retired with honor from his post as Librarian, Translator, and Editor with the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution. He had intended to devote the last phase of his life to further linguistic and geophysical studies, trammeled by official responsibilities. His death, just as he and his wife had begun a winter vacation at St. Petersburg, Florida, deprives his colleagues of the help of one whose interest and many national and international contacts might have been expected to continue for some years.

摘要:

July 1, 1949, marked the formal establishment of the Geophysical Institute as a department of the University of Alaska. The Congress of the United States, by Public Law 580 of the 79th Congress, and by Public Law 491 of the 80th Congress, established the Institute and appropriated $975,000 for construction of a laboratory building (see Fig. 1) to be devoted to basic research in arctic natural science and for construction of six residences for personnel of the Institute and visiting scientists. The Geophysical Institute grew out of a modest program commenced in 1929 by means of a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation for auroral height measurements, through a steadily developing series of basic research studies, to the present activities embracing many fields of research in arctic natural science. The Geophysical Institute has the defined purpose of advancing knowledge in the broad field of physics of the earth.
