SummaryA study of Gm allotypes in a Caucasoid family with hypogammaglobulinaemic probands, showed qualitative (unexpected or lacking Gm allotypes) and quantitative (increased or decreased Gm contents) abnormalities in many relatives. Part of these observations can be most probably accounted for by inheritance of aGm1,17;5,28haplotype, not described in Caucasians yet, and by anin vivoexpression of latent Gm genes.

Summaryα‐L‐Fucosyltransferases were demonstrated in human saliva which catalyze the transfer of L‐fucose from GDP‐L‐[14C]‐fucose to oligosaccharides from human milk. An α‐(1→4)‐L‐fucosyltransferase that synthesizes lacto‐N‐fucopentaose II and lacto‐N‐difucohexaose I from lacto‐N‐tetraose and lacto‐N‐fucopentaose I, respectively, was detected in saliva samples of Le(a‐b+) secretors and Le(a + b‐) non‐secretors in which Leasubstance was secreted. This enzyme activity was demonstrable neither in saliva samples of Le(a‐b‐) secretors nor non‐secretors. An α‐(1→2)‐L‐fucosyltransferase, that synthesizes lacto‐N‐fucopentaose I from lacto‐N‐tetraose, was detected in saliva samples from Le(a‐b+) secretors which secreted H and Lebsubstances and from Le(a‐b‐) secretors which secreted only H substance. An α‐(1→3)‐L‐fucosyltransferase was present in all saliva samples of different ABO and Lewis blood groups, irrespective of their ABH secretor status of the donors. SummaryHuman erythrocyte T&NN antigens were exposed to fresh sera from single human donors and CMP‐[14C]sialic acid without activators in a single 24 hr incubation at 37° C. There was similar sialic acid (NAN) uptake, on the average 2.7 mol/mol T antigen subunit (mol wt 40,000), with various NN‐and MM‐derived T antigens and transferase sera in all different combinations. Sera from donors with theMgene but not from those lacking it incorporated NAN into NN antigen (c. 1 mol NAN/mol NN antigen subunit, mol wt 50,000).The profound difference in sialytransferase action between sera from donors with theMgene and those lacking it was substantiated by repeated incubations of NN‐derived T antigen with CMP‐NAN and MM donor transferase serum, which incorporated 32% more NAN than did repeated incubations of the same antigen with CMP‐NAN and NN donor transferase serum. SummaryThe response by the mother to the paternal antigens of her foetus was evaluated in the rat by the production of a serum factor which inhibits macrophage migration (serum inhibitory factor, SIF). The SIF response depended upon antigenic differences controlled by genes within the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), as demonstrated by the use of congenic strains. Differences between mother and foetus within the RT1.A* region of the MHC led to SIF stimulation, whereas, differences in the RT1.B region did not. The SIF response followed the course of the pregnancy: it began at the time of implantation, reached a maximum at birth and then fell precipitously. In contrast, the SIF response to skin grafting did not correlate with differences in the MHC. Thus, the antigenic factors stimulating this maternal response to foetal antigens appear to depend upon a unique type of genetic difference, and this may be a factor in the apparent immunologic privilege enjoyed by the foetus during gestation.

SummaryVarious genetic models were examined with regard to the control of the antibody response in rats. Distributions of the response to poly(Glu52Lys33Tyr15) were determined in the inbred ACI (high responder) and F344 (low responder) strains and in the F1, F2 and backcross generations. Falconer's test for the effective number of genes showed that there was a larger number of genes involved if the maternal parent were the high responder strain. Studies in mating combinations involving high and moderate responders showed that the effective number of genes influencing the antibody response was much lower than in the mating between the high and low responders. Theoretical distributions of antibody response levels were generated using Monte Carlo techniques. The Kolmogorov‐Smirnov goodness‐of‐fit test indicated that a three‐gene model best fitted the matings involving the ACI female and that a two‐gene model best accounted for matings involving the F344 female. These calculations indicate that the antibody response is a complex, multifactorial trait whose expression is significantly affected by the responder status of the matern

SummaryA strain survey has been undertaken to examine polymorphism of age‐dependent changes in antigen elimination, immune responsiveness and tolerance inducibility. In young mice of tested strains, other than C57BL/6J, aggregate‐freed mouse Ig was eliminated faster than was the xenogeneic Ig (RGG); C57BL/6J was the only exception. The rate of elimination increased with age in all strains, tested. Antibody formation to RGG decreased in 3 (BALB/cJ, 129/J, DBA/2J) out of the eleven strains tested at 5‐7 and 31‐40 weeks of age; there was a considerable strain variation in the extent of this decrease.
