SUMMARYWe immunized a BALB/c mouse with the lambda‐bearing rat IgG, myeloma IR31, fused its spleen cells with the hybridoma parent line P3.X63.Ag8.653, and isolated a monoclonal antibody (G33/11) directed against rat immunoglobulin lambda chains. We used this antibody to classify two existing rat hybridomas as lambda‐bearing proteins (D4.37HL.252 and PC61.5, and isolated one new lambda‐bearing rat IgM hybridoma, G36/1. All the normal inbred rat sera that were tested contained lambda‐bearing Ig as detected by G33/11, at levels ranging from 1.5% to 13% of the total serum Ig, the mean value being 7.9%. This antibody will be valuable for broadening our understanding of the immunogenetics of the rat, and for the characterization of monoclonal antibodies made in this

SUMMARYGm and Km(1) allotypes in 37 mothers of neonates with severe Group B streptococcal (GBS) infection were compared with 115 mothers of non‐infected infants, 36 of whom were known to be colonized with GBS. Deficits in Glm(1) and Km(l), and an increased incidence of G2m(23), were found in mothers of infected infants. Km(1) was associated mainly with the phenotype Gm(1, (2), 3, 17; 23; 5, 10, 11, 21) in mothers of infected infants while being uniformly distributed in mothers of non‐infected infants. This study would seem, therefore, to support reports of Gm and Km(1) allotype involvement in maternal response to GBS infection and immunity in the new

SUMMARYA case of recombination between the putative class I ELA antigen series and the strudure(s) governing mixed lymphocyte reactivity in an informative horse family is described. The results of serological typing, ‘lysostripping’ and mixed lymphocyte culture tests strongly suggest that the recombination took place between two loci and is not intragenic. An alloantigenic membrane structure, provisionally called B1, which does not belong to the known ELA series, was also involved in the cross‐over. The B1 antigen resembles the class II gene products of other species in two respects: it is not present on platelets, and doantiserum with specificity for B1 inhibits the stimulatory effect of B1‐carrying cells in mixed lymphocyte cultures. The B1 antigen does not follow the classical distribution, however, being expressed on both B and T lymphocytes. The finding of separate loci for the first series of ELA antigens and the MLR governing structure(s) demonstrates the similarity of the genetic organization of the horse MHC to that in other

SUMMARYFor 75 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 39 laboratory and clinical characteristics, including HLA‐A, B, C and DR typing, were analysed using a cluster analysis technique. Three groups were identified. Group I (46 patients) was characterized by infrequently severe disease, good response to therapy and infrequent multisystem involvement. Group I1 (24 patients) was characterized by a severe course of disease (although the tendency to remit after therapy was not unusual), and, frequently, renal involvement and pericarditis. Group 111 (5 patients) was characterized by more severe renal disease. Of the 75 patients studied, 38.7% possessed HLA‐DR3, compared to 17.4% of controls. Group I patients did not differ from controls but 80% of Group II patients and 4/5 Group III patients had DR3. SUMMARYIn crossbred Charmois lambs, Bent‐limb disease appears to be associated with the phenotype ‘z,i’ which corresponds to a doubly recessive genotype at the two lociOL‐Z(a minor lymphocyte antigen locus independent ofOLA, the major histocompatibility complex of the sheep) and I (involved in genetic control of the expression of R and O antigens found in various body fluids and on erythrocytes). The disease seems to be controlled by a single autosomal recessive gene, provisionally named bl (its normal or healthy alleleBlbeing dominant) which is distinct from, though linked to, the genes at theOL‐Zand I loci (observed haplotype:bl,z,i). In the Lacaune breed, besides the already observedbl,r,ihaplotype, there is an additional one:bI,z,I. SUMMARYSix anti‐HLA class II mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were used in conjunction with a rat monoclonal antibody raised against horse lymphocytes to define class II major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules in the horse. By utilizing an ELISA assay and complement dependent lymphocytotoxicity assay, five out of the six anti‐HLA class II antibodies and the rat anti‐horse monoclonal antibody were found to react with a high percentage of peripheral blood lymphocytes. Flow cytometry demonstrated a variable antigen density on peripheral blood lymphocytes and clear evidence for expression by lymphocytes that carried no detectable surface immunoglobulin. None of the antibodies reacted with equine platelets. The mAbs immunoprecipitated an antigenic complex ofM, 29,000‐33,000 from horse lymphocytes. It appears that the distribution of MHC class II antigens in the horse is different from that in man but is similar to that in the dog, since MHC class II antigens are expressed on resting peripheral blood lymphocytes which lack membrane‐bound immunoglobulins. Correlations between the distribution of MHC class II antigens on lymphocyte subpopulations and their role in immunological phenomena may contribute to our understanding of the functional properties of these

SUMMARYThe classification of antigens into TD, TI‐1 and TI‐2 varieties raises the question of whether responses to these antigens are produced by distinct or identical subpopulations of B cells. In the present study we have examined the extent of intraclonal specificity variation in the progeny of PFC appearing after stimulation with two unrelated antigens. Mouse lymphoid cells were stimulated with pairs of TD and TI antigens, PFC were individually cultured and daughter PFC examined for their specificity. In all combinations used, PFC responding to TD antigen engendered, after 48 h of culture, a high frequency of PFC daughters expressing one or the other antibody specificity, notwithstanding the specificity of parental PFC. However, PFC responding to TI antigens seemed less subject to variation in specificity, and PFC daughters engendered after a 48 h culture period were, in the majority, of the parental specificity.
