SUMMARYThe relationship between the immunoglobulin kappa light chain allotypes and autoantibodies was studied in a series of seven human monoclonal kappa‐bearing IgM antibodies with Rheumatoid Factor (RF) activity, two IgM anti‐low density lipoprotein (LDL) antibodies, and one IgM anti‐intermediate filament (IF) antibody. Residues at amino acid positions 153 and 191 related to the Km allotypes in human kappa chains were determined by an HPLC tryptic fingerprint and corroborated by amino acid sequence analysis. All the autoantibodies shared similar variable regions derived from the V gene(s). The seven RF and the anti IF were associated with the Km(3) constant region allotype whereas the two antiLDL were associated with the Km(1,2) allotype. Thus, monoclonal autoantibodies showed the same Km allotypic distribution as the normal population. SUMMARYEjaculated human seminal plasma cells obtained from 46 healthy men and 48 infertile patients were tested for expression of HLA class I and II antigens by complement‐mediated cytotoxicity, cell‐binding radioimmunoassay (CB‐RIA), and an ELISA involving monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). In a group of healthy men tested for HLA expression on human spermatozoa, 4 of 46 were positive for class I and II HLA antigens. However, the results were negative in a second examination of the same donors, possibly on account of alterations with time in the expression of various subpopulations of cells which are antigen positive or antigen negative. In a group of infertile patients, we found positive expression of HLA class I and II antigens in 7 of 48 men. The samples contained immature and mature sperm but no contaminating leucocytes or epithelial

SUMMARYAntigenic specificities of serum proteins from the MOL‐ANJ strain of mice (a strain derived from Japanese wild mice,Mus musculus molossinus) were studied by gel precipitation with alloantisera produced by reciprocal alloimmunization between MOL‐ANJ and BALB/c mice. An alloantigen which migrates immuno‐electrophoretically in the β region of serum proteins has been identified. SUMMARYThree allele‐specific monoclonal antibodies to Pgp‐1 (Ly‐24) were used to biochemically characterize the cell surface structures with which they reacted and to map the gene(s) coding for these antigens. The targets of these three monoclonal antibodies (mAb) were shown to be encoded by a gene situated on chromosome 2 close to β2m [gene order (Pgp‐1‐β2m‐a)] and no recombination between the loci detected by the three antibodies was revealed by genetic analysis. The genetic mapping of loci and tissue distribution of these antigens suggested that they might all correspond to a particular allelic form of the mouse phagocyte glycoprotein‐1 (Pgp‐1) antigen. Biochemical and serological analysis confirmed that this was indeed the case and revealed that all three mAbs were directed to one epitope. It is surprising that the tissue distribution defined by one mAb (Ly‐24A) was different from that for the two other (Ly‐24B) antibodies, despite the serological and biochemical identity of their respective targets. SUMMARYTheELY‐Ilocus controls the expression of a polymorphic cell surface antigen of equine lymphocytes which was detected using antibodies generated by alloimmunization with peripheral blood lymphocytes. The ELY‐1 antigens were not detected on erythrocytes or platelets by absorption experiments. The two alleles, which have been designated ELY‐1.1 and ELY‐1.2, are expressed codominantly and appear to constitute a closed system at the population level. In family studies, the ELY‐1 antigens segregated as products of an autosomal locus not linked to the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) of the horse. In the complement mediated lymphocyte microcytotoxicity test, antisera to the ELY‐1 antigens selectively killed peripheral blood lymphocytes which did not express surface immunoglobulin. The ELY‐1 antigens may be useful markers for equine T cells when assayed in this fashion. Three alloantisera were used in immune precipitation of iodinated and solubilized cell surface proteins from peripheral blood lymphocytes. Electrophoresis of the precipitates in sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)‐polyacrylamide gels demonstrated strong bands in the Mr180–190K range that were shared in the three different preparations. SUMMARYPhenotypes positive for G2m(23) but negative for Glm(3) and G3m(5,10,11,13,14) are generally very infrequent in Caucasian populations. We recently Gm typed 372 Australian blood donors, predominantly of European descent, and found two Gm(1;23) and five Gm(1,2;23) individuals among them. This finding suggests that the haplotypes Gm1,17:23;21and Gm1,2,17,23,21may occur, in some European populations, with a frequency considerably higher than has been generally assumed.
