SUMMARYAntiserum to a rabbit HDL allotype has been produced in a sheep. Qualitative and quantitative immunological tests of whole rabbit serum and purified HDL polypeptides, as well as association tests, showed that the absorbed sheep immune serum reacts with the HDL allotype referred to as R 67.

SUMMARYLea‐ and Leb‐active substances present in normal human urine were isolated by sequential membrane filtration, column chromatography with DEAE‐Sephadex (A‐25), and gel filtration of Bio‐Gel (P‐6). Lea‐active substance with the highest activity was obtained in the P‐1 fraction (0.8 mg/1) from urine of a non‐secretor type by the final gel filtration. Leb‐active substance with the highest activity was also obtained in the P‐1 fraction (0.2 mg/1) from urine of a secretor type. The P‐1 of the non‐secretor inhibited Lea‐anti‐Leahaemagglutination minimally at 4 μg/ml, and the P‐1 of the secretor inhibited Leb‐anti‐Lebhaemagglutination at 1 μg/ml. Both P‐1 fractions possessing Leaor Lebactivity were characteristic in having a much higher fucose content than other isolated fractions, and seemed to be complex carbohydrates with mole

SUMMARYOf 118 Dutch patients suffering from ankylosing spondylitis (AS) 81.4% were found to be positive for the HLA antigen B27. The B27 frequency proved to be significantly higher in patients in whom the disease had an early onset.In addition to B27, another HLA antigen may be associated with AS; the antigen Bw16 was found to be significantly increased in B27 negative AS patients.HLA phenotype frequencies were also determined in 109 patients with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In fifty‐eight ulcerative colitis (UC) patients a raised incidence of A11 was noticed. In fifty‐one patients with Crohn's disease (CD) the antigen B18 showed an increased frequency. Both deviations were statistically significant. In thirty‐nine patients suffering from both AS and IBD 50% proved to be B27 positive, which is significantly different from the B27 frequency in patients with AS alone. SUMMARYBy using the graft‐versus‐host reaction (GVHR) based on the spleen enlargement test of Simonsen (1962), lymphocytes from BALB/c mice immune to syngeneic ST2 or ST5 sarcomata were shown to behave like BALB/c anti‐DBA/2 lymphocytes in specifically increasing the GVHR in (BALB/c × DBA/2)F1newborns as compared with non‐immune BALB/c cells. No such effect was evident when BALB/c anti‐ST2 or anti‐ST5 lymphoid cells were given to (BALB/c × C3Hf)F1and to (BALB/c × AKR)F1mice; anti‐ST5 lymphocytes were also ineffective into (BALB/c × C57BL/6)F1newborns in which anti‐ST2 lymphocytes were able to increase the GVHR over the background induced by non‐immune BALB/c cells. A third immunogenic BALB/c fibrosarcoma C‐1 was able to activate syngeneic lymphocytes which gave an augmented GVHR in (BALB/c × C3Hf)F1and (BALB/c × AKR)F1but not in the other hybrids. The efficacy of BALB/c anti‐ST2 or ‐ST5 lymphocytes in reproducing a BALB/c anti‐DBA/2 like anamnestic response in (BALB/c × DBA/2)F1mice support previous findings indicating that non‐H‐2 alien histocompatibility antigens of the DBA/2 strain, are expressed on these tumour cells. SUMMARYThe membrane glycoprotein defect of Mkred cells was studied using discontinuous sodium dodecylsulphate—polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, carbohydrate analytical procedures and lectins. The results suggest that Mkerythrocyte membranes contain only about half of the normal amount of the MN and Ss sialoglycoproteins, both molecules being not qualitatively different from normal. The major membrane protein exhibits an increased molecular weight in the above red cells. Some data on Mgand Miltenberger class five cells are presented for comparison. SUMMARYThe non‐H‐2 linked, lymphocyte activating determinants (LADs), which are coded by the minor (histocompatibility) lymphocyte stimulating locus (Mls), were detected on B lymphocytes, but not on immunoglobulin (Ig) negative or on theta positive T lymphocytes. These determinants, like the complement receptor and surface IgD, develop late in neonatal life. Thus, the Mls coded LADs mark a population of B lymphocytes which are not present in the spleens of newborn to 2‐week‐old mice.
