SummaryAntibodies were raised in chickens to the (Fab')2fragment of normal murine IgG and to the κ‐myeloma protein MOPC 41. Following appropriate absorptions or purification by immune affinity chromatography the chicken antibodies bound specifically to both T‐ and B‐cells of mice, rats and guinea‐pigs as detected by quantitative cytofluorescence, radioactive binding assays and transmission and scanning immunoelectronmicroscopy. These antibodies are directed against polypeptide determinants of the Fab fragment, block antigen binding by purified idiotype‐bearing murine antibodies, and provide useful probes for visualization and analysis of immunoglobulin‐like surface receptors of rodent B

SummaryThe data indicates that Papuans with the Austronesian haplotypeGmf,a;bproduce significantly higher levels of tetanus specific antibody, than Papuans without this haplotype, suggesting that response to tetanus toxoid in man is associated with the Gm phenotype of the individual. SummaryAntisera to hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigen, both of human and rabbit origin, have been examined. The anti‐HBsserum derived from a multiply transfused patient did, in addition, contain antibodies directed against the inherited β‐lipoprotein antigen Ag(x), whereas one of the rabbit immune sera also contained antibody to the inherited Lp(a) antigen. Thus, in human, as well as in animal anti‐HBssera, antibodies to inherited normal serum antigens may cause false positive reactions. This problem may be overcome by absorption procedures if appropriate control systems are avialable. False positive reactions caused by the Ag(x) antigen may also be avoided by use of agarose as supporting medium for the test, as Ag(x) precipitin lines do not appear in this medium. SummaryAn attempt was made to characterize the amino acid interchanges in the presumably allelic products of MHC (H‐2 and HLA) as revealed by the results published so far of microsequencing analysis of their 20‐30 N‐terminal positions. The distances between interchanged amino acids were judged by several criteria: the Sneath's and Grantham's indices, the classification of the substitutions as intra‐versus intergroup (i.e. groups of chemically related amino acids), the minimum number and type of underlying base substitutions according to the genetic code. The detected variation was also compared to that in highly variable (fibrinopeptides A and B) and highly conservative (histone IV) amino acid sequences. A selection of human haemoglobin α‐chain variants, without known pathological effects, was further used as a standard of reference for intraspecific ‘permissible variation'. The results of these comparisons do not prove, but are not incompatible with, the idea that the function of the H‐2 (HLA) fragment displaying the observed molecular variability, does not impose too rigid a constraint on its structure. SummaryThe H‐2 restriction phenomenon was evaluated with regard to the immune response to Moloney sarcoma virus (M‐MSV)‐induced tumours in the mouse. Using anin vitro51Cr release assay the lytic activity of lymphocytes from M‐MSV immune strains of mice, including several H‐2 recombinant strains, was determined on leukaemic cell lines originally induced in mice of different strains by neconatal infection with Moloney leukaemia virus. In analogy with other experimental models, it was observed that a compatibility between effector and target cells at the K and/or D regions is generally necessary and sufficient to obtain the cytotoxic effect. However, for the H‐2dand H‐2bhaplotypes, identity at the K or D region respectively was not sufficient for lysis to occur.
