SUMMARYIn order to obtain structural information and to facilitate studies of the covalent structure of T‐cell immunoglobulin, we have performed investigations of the peptide fragments of the heavy chain of this molecule, on a comparative basis, with heavy chains of serum immunoglobulins. T‐cell immunoglobulin was isolated from125I‐labelled culture medium of monoclonal continuously cultured T‐lymphoma cells by means of immunoadsorbents. Peptides were prepared from the purified125I‐labelled heavy chain by means of cleavage with cyanogen bromide or digestion with trypsin. We then resolved these peptides and compared them with those peptides derived from131I‐labelled murine μ, γ and α chains separately and in mixed label experiments by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate containing buffers, 2 dimensional peptide mapping and ion exchange chromatography. The profiles of the radiolabelled peptides obtained from the T‐lymphoma heavy chains were quite distinct from those of murine γ chains but indicated a structural similarity to both μ and α chains, which share some common peptides.These results are consistent with the antigenic and physicochemical data available and suggest that T‐cell immunoglobulin is a new isotype that shows similarities to IgA and IgM, but of which the precise nature of the constant region has

SUMMARYStructural studies of T‐cell immunoglobulin light chains have been carried out in order to ascertain whether they possess a unique structure or if they resemble standard kappa or lambda isotypes. T‐cell immunoglobulin was isolated from125I‐labelled culture medium of monoclonal, continuously cultured T‐lymphoma cells, and the purified125I‐labelled light chains were subjected to either cleavage by cyanogen bromide or digestion with trypsin. SUMMARYThe geographical correlations between the incidence of various cancers and the HLA and ABO antigen frequencies are studied. There is, for example, a positive correlation between breast and colorectal carcinoma and AI, B8 and B12 antigens, and a negative one between prostate carcinoma and B12.The role of the HLA system itself or other genes involved in these associations is discussed. This study gives some evidence of a possible genetic background of susceptibility or resistance to cancer.

SUMMARYThe mitogenic responses of chicken peripheral blood lymphocytes were compared in two partially inbred chicken lines and in their hybrids. The lymphocytes of line P chickens showed a higher phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) response than those of line V chickens and (P x V)F1hybrids. The Con A responses were of the same magnitude in all chicken lines. The higher PHA response in line P chickens was not sex‐linked, apparently was not associated with the major histocompatibility complex and it did not correlate with immunoglobulin G allotype

SUMMARYThe primary and secondary immune response to the antigen bovine pancreatic α‐chymotrypsin was investigated in in inbred mice. It was found that strain differences in the immune response only became apparent after secondary immunization. The genetic control of the immune response was investigated in twelve different strains of mice, F1, F2and F1backcross hybrids, following secondary immunization. A continous distribution for the mean antibody responsiveness was obtained. High responsiveness was associated with both the H‐2 haplotype and three non‐H‐2 loci. SUMMARYThe global dominance of ‘high’ or ‘low’ genes operating in high (H) or low (L) selected immune responder lines of mice has been studied in F1hybrids between these lines and various inbred strains of mice. Two antigens were used: cyte, SE) and the alum‐precipitated bovine serum albumin (BSA‐A1). In (H × L)F1hybrids the H response is partially dominant for the two antigens during the primary response. This is the most frequent feature observed in hybrids between H or L and inbred strains. But some exceptions indicate that the quantitative immune response genes of H and L mice aar not always equivalent to those of inbred strains. In (L x AKR)F1hybrids immunized with SE, there is a dominance of the L response. Concerning BSA‐A1, an initial, short lasting dominance of L response is observed in (L × C57B1/6)F1and (L × C3H)F1hybrids. The lack of secondary response to BSA‐A1, characteristic of the L line, is completely recessive in all hybrids. The question is open whether primary and secondary responses have the same genetic regulation. No overdominance of high or low responsiveness is observed.
