摘要:
Simplified test conditions for the evaluation of lenses based on MTF measurements are described, and criteria for interchangeable lenses for 35 mm cameras are proposed. Measurements are to be made for white light, at the infinite conjugate plane, on axis and at 0·7 field (15 mm off axis) positions, at full aperture and ƒ/5·6. The focus is to be adjusted at each aperture so as to give the best MTF response at 30 lines/mm on axis. The MTF responses at 15 and 30 lines/mm are to be examined for the evaluation of the lenses. Simple criteria based on the experimental data for about 100 different types of interchangeable lenses are proposed.

摘要:
In order to assess the importance of the instrumentally measured quality of components of a visual imaging system one must attempt to take due account of the effect of the eye's own quality on the viewed image. Recent studies in a number of research institutions have shed considerable light on the detailed workings of the eye so that it is now possible, at least tentatively, to describe the performance of the visual system in terms of a series of quality functions. These various components of visual quality are discussed and their interaction with the quality factors of optical components external to the eye are considered. Finally some of the more popular M.T.F.-based figures of merit are considered in terms of the combined performance of an optical system and the eye.

摘要:
The concept of the assessment of image quality by means of the optical transfer function (OTF) has progressed in its development through the stages of hardware development and acceptable correlation between measured and computed data. As a result of this work OTF is accepted as a viable means of specifying and measuring image quality in the standards and research field for which sophisticated instrumentation has been designed. Present development is aimed at producing instrumentation with OTF used as one parameter in complex equipments capable of measuring a number of optical parameters, evaluating and presenting the overall value of image performance.
