A method for high-pass filtering of images in real time is described. It is based on incoherent optical-electronic subtraction of a focused and a defocused version of the input image.

It is shown that for the holographic reconstruction of diffuse objects the use of a vibrating coherent source decreases the contrast of the speckle pattern, and that for certain classes of objects resolution is not affected. This is true in particular for grating-like objects when the source is vibrated in a direction parallel to the lines of the grating, and an important application is to the pattern of straight, parallel fringes commonly obtained in holographic interferometry. When a more complex object is used, the speckle reduction would be accompanied by a loss of resolution.

Une approche de la fonction image en microscopie électronique est effectuée; elle s'applique tout particulièrement aux petits objets fortement défocalisés. Des fonctions de transfert complexes, de module un, permettent de décrire le transfert sans zéros obtenu dans ces conditions, et montrent qu'il est possible de reconstruire une image parfaite non perturbée par 1'image conjugée.

Guided by the concept of arch-like structures for optimum design, self-weight deflections are obtained for various structural configurations constructed within the envelope of a solid disc. This is achieved through a finite element formulation for the axi-symmetric system. The superiority of arch-type designs over solid discs with respect to deflection and weight is established. The theoretical predictions of reduction in the weight to stiffness ratio for mirror structures by removing materials in an arch-like manner is substantiated by the use of silicone rubber models.

A method is presented for the solution of homogeneous integral equations of Fredholm type with non-symmetric kernel, whose eigenfunctions are not orthogonal to one another. The method requires the previous determination of the part of each eigenfunction orthogonal to the eigenfunctions of lower order. For this purpose, use is made of the procedure valid for symmetric kernels, which provides also the eigenvalues for the non-symmetric case

It is shown that the time-change of the natural perspective, due to the movement of rigid bodies relative to an observer, conveys information about geometrical properties of the moving surfaces. Certain differential properties of the dynamic perspective are shown to be conserved. These properties are related to determinants of the shape of the surface elements of the moving bodies, as for instance the sign of the gaussian curvature, the asymptotic curves and the future contours. A kinematic analysis of the motion parallax field shows that the type of parallax field is related to the slant of the surface relative to the observer. The theory is of possible significance to visual kinesthesis.
