Errors which occur during the deposition of thin film narrow-band optical filters can be classified as either static or dynamic. An approximate theory of the effects of these two types of error on turning value monitoring is developed and the results are used to devise a modification to the conventional technique which enables filter performance much nearer theoretical to be achieved.

The present work is concerned with the theoretical design and investigation of a new system for optical pumping of solid state lasers. The originality of the new system lies in the use of optical fibres to transmit the light from its source to the laser-active material, thus allowing complete spatial separation of the two. The degree of uniformity achieved in illuminating the surface of the laser material is theoretically investigated and is shown to be very high. The efficiency of the system is also examined and the resulting advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. The possibilities for the realization of such a system are discussed and various ways of construction are proposed.

Systems of a catadioptric form generally have central obscurations that give rise to annular-type entrance pupils. These are found in most cases to be well approximated to the region contained within two ellipses which are generally of different eccentricities. The O.T.F. (optical transfer function) for an annular aperture at a given image point may be expressed as the combination of four integrals, one for each of the possible overlap areas which together describe the form of the overlap region between the two ellipses. Each integral is of a similar nature to the one giving the O.T.F. associated with an elliptical aperture. A computer programme has been written to calculate the O.T.F. using Hopkin's algorithm (1957). Because only one analytical example (aberration-free case) could be obtained for a comparison with this programme, O.T.F. measurements were carried out experimentally on a simple doublet having a central obscuration in order that a more substantial check could be made. The maximum error encountered in the programme was in the neighbourhood of 2 per cent. As a practical example, a study has been made of an objective described by Canzek (1971).

Theoretical consideration is given to the error of the optical transfer function caused by noise and truncation of the measured line spread function. The error due to noise is shown to be an increasing function of the scanning range of the line spread function. An optimum scanning range is found to exist that minimizes the total error resulting from noise and truncation. Numerical calculation is presented for the case of an aberration-free circular aperture and the change in total error with varying scanning range and noise level is illustrated.

Surface ellipsometry involves measurement of the ratio of eigenvalues (reflection coefficients) associated with the orthogonal linear eigenpolarization parallel and perpendicular to the plane of incidence. This paper shows that the ratio of complex eigenvalues of any optical system with known arbitrary eigenpolarizations can be determined, with equal ease, using the same ellipsometer arrangements of surface ellipsometry. Expressions are derived that give the ratio of eigenvalues as a function of (1) the Cartesian complex polarization variables that describe the eigenpolarizations, (2) a set of nulling angles in the symmetrical PC1SC2A or asymmetrical PCSA and PSCA ellipsometer arrangements, (3) the slow-to-fast complex relative transmittance of the compensator(s). The results are applied to the ellipsometric measurement of optical rotatory dispersion and circular dichroism.
