It is possible to determine any Fourier coefficient (spatial frequency) in a real two-dimensional distribution of illumination by allowing the distribution to throw the shadow of a suitably placed grid onto an observation plane, where the contrast of the shadow measures the modulus of the Fourier coefficient and its position measures the phase of the coefficient. A pilot model of a scheme for reading the Arabic numerals 0, 1, …, 9 using only three Fourier coefficients has been set up and run successfully. The possibilities of the method are assessed.

La méthode consiste à produire des interférences entre un faisceau émergent de l'objectif O à étudier et un faisceau de référence cohérent avec le premier (on utilise une source laser). L'intensité résultante est enregistrée simultanément sur deux plaques photographiques disposées gélatine contre gélatine, que l'on développe. Les deux hologrammes obtenus sont identiques. On les superpose (les franges étant parallèles) et on éclaire l'ensemble en faisceau parallèle. On obtient la fonction d'autocorrélation de l'amplitude lumineuse dans le plan où l'on a pris la photographie, en mesurant le flux qui traverse normalement la partie commune aux deux hologrammes. Toute la gamme des fréquences spatiales est obtenue en déplaçant les deux plaques l'une par rapport à l'autre (les franges de l'une restant parallèles aux franges de l'autre).

An optical spatial phase modulator consisting of a thin polymer membrane mirror applied over a compartmented sub-structure has been devised for use as an input transducer for coherent optical computers. This device is called the ‘membrane light modulator’ or MLM. Membrane elements are 10 to 50 microns in diameter, have a sub-microsecond response time, and require only 10 picojoules per element to produce a full 360° phase reversal in reflection. An array of approximately 2000 elements is described having an active area of 4 by 4 mm. This MLM has been used as an input transducer for a coherent optical computer which takes one-dimensional Fourier transforms.

Expressions for the intensity distribution in the diffraction images of a general triangular wave-object have been obtained. The diffracting aperture considered is an aberration-free annular aperture. The circular aperture system appears as a particular case when the obstruction ratio is zero. Use of incoherent light has been assumed throughout. General triangular wave response of such systems to spatial frequencies in the object has been plotted and the object function, which gives a wave response nearly similar to that of the sine wave, has been pointed out.

Die Fouriertransformierte der Intensitätsverteilung im Bild eines teilkohärent beleuchteten Objektes wird mit Hilfe des Sampling-Theorems berechnet. Die dafür notwendigen Reihenentwicklungen werden nach trigonometrischen und Sampling-Funktionen vorgenommen. Die Erläuterung des Ergebnisses erfolgt an einem Beispiel. Die Anwendung des Sampling-Theorems zur numerischen Berechnung des Fourierspektrums erfordert einen minimalen Rechenaufwand für eine vorgegebene Genauigkeit.
