The dielectric tensor ε of cubic electro-optical materials polarized along a cube edge is of the same form as ε for magneto-optical materials except that the former is symmetric and the latter anti-symmetric. The polar, longitudinal, and transverse characteristic matrices necessary to solve multi-layer thin film electro- or magneto-optical scattering problems are given in terms of a symmetry parameter σ = ±. Using a λ/4 ZnS film in the transverse orientation and placed on an E-mirror, and a multi-layer dielectric structure consisting ofRdouble λ /4 layers plus an additional λ /4 film, phase shifts of 180° are predicted forR= 3 and a controlling electric field of ∼ 1 volt/cm.

Grassmann's third law dealing with metameric colours is restated in a set-theoretical language. This leads to an exact formulation of this law and an explicit definition of the objects dealt with in colour space. As an application, the principle known as persistence of colour match is restated, and some consequences from it are derived.

The formulation of the optical resonator theory is outlined stressing the importance of the electromagnetic boundary value problem. The confocal resonator theory is discussed. For a large Fresnel number the field configurations of the resonant waves are investigated close to the axis, and the surfaces of constant phase are calculated. Replacing a surface of constant phase by an appropriate reflector yields a new resonator system, some properties of which can be derived from the ‘equivalent’ confocal resonator system. This model must, however, be restricted to the replacement of surfaces of constant phase inside of the confocal geometry and does not hold outside of it since these surfaces belonging to a travelling wave move with the speed of light. The spherically concentric and the Fabry-Perot resonator are treated as particular examples. It is shown that the spot sizes at the spherical mirrors of the confocal, the spherically concentric, and the hemi-spherical resonator system as well as at the plane mirrors of the Fabry-Perot resonator are identical for the corresponding values of the Fresnel number. Finally, some particular questions concerning the underlaying asymptotic expansions are discussed in order to stress their validity.

It is shown that a holographic interference pattern may be magnified and observed by means of a microscope working in the direction opposite to that of normal use. That plane in which a hologram would be recorded by a photographic plate is in front of the eyepiece. The observer looks through the microscope at the objective end. The magnification is shown to obey a formula similar to the usual formula for the magnification of a microscope. The two formulae are identical in the paraxial case, and in the non-paraxial case provided a certain condition is satisfied. Photographic recordings of magnified interference patterns, taken some distance behind the microscope objective, are shown.

A method is described to determine the Fourier analysis of the image of a slit of finite width using polarization interferometers. Sinusoidal fringes of variable spatial frequency and of contrast one are projected on the slit image and the output flux is recorded. The modulation of the flux when the fringe system is displaced with respect to the slit image yields the spatial spectrum of the slit image. The spatial spectrum of the slit object being known, the transfer function (both amplitude and phase) of the optical system can be determined.
