摘要:
A review is presented of various investigations on coherence and fluctuations of light which have been carried out within the last few years. In particular some of the research carried out at the University of Rochester and related investigations undertaken elsewhere are described. This research is mainly concerned with the following topics: classical and quantum description of higher order coherence effects, photon correlation and coincidence experiments, stellar correlation interferometry, photon bunching, and the determination of the statistical properties of light from photoelectric counting experiments.

Selon le principe de Huygens tous les plans d'un instrument d'optique contiennent la même information, mais dans un forme plus ou moins déchiffrable. Pour déchiffrer lesNdonnées invariantes dans une illumination quelconque quasi-monochromatique il faut faire 2N2mesures. Avec l'illumination cohérente il n'en faut que 2N;Namplitudes etNphases, que l'on peut enregistrer dans une seule plaque photographique par le simple artifice d'y ajouter un fond cohérent. Une telle photographie, un ‘hologramme’ contient le front d'onde original comme ‘gelé’ dans l'emulsion. Pour le faire ‘revivre’ il ne faut qu'illuminer la plaque avec le fond cohérent ou ‘faisceau de référence’. L'auteur a découvert ce principe en 1948, et l'holographie a eu ensuite une brillante renaissance après l'invention du laser surtout par les travaux de MM. E. N. Leith et J. Upatnieks et de G. W. Stroke. On présente des hologrammes et des reconstitutions anciennes et récentes, ainsi qu'une discussions des variantes et quelques applications.

摘要:
A review is given of the laws of non-linear optical reflection which govern the direction, polarization and intensity of second harmonic light generated in reflection. The complex non-linear susceptibility of III-V and II-VI piezoelectric compounds has been measured over a range of frequencies and shows characteristic dispersive properties. Both the amplitude and the phase can be determined. When the medium has a centre of inversion, the reflected second harmonic production is several orders of magnitude smaller. The effect has magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole character and has been observed in silicon, germanium and several metals and alloys. In metals the contribution from core electrons and the conduction electron plasma have the same order of magnitude.

摘要:
The open resonator is a new device in physical optics which has been extensively investigated in recent years. Important applications have been described in laser technique and in microwave technique. Theory and experimental results are briefly reviewed, with emphasis on physical conceptions rather than on mathematical details. Plane parallel Fabry-Perot resonators, spherical mirror resonators and flat-roof resonators are described, along with the closely related beam waveguides.

The Use of Diffraction-based Criteria of Image Quality in Automatic Optical Design |

In automatic optical design it is customary to minimize the mean square value of the aberrations along selected rays. This leads in different cases to different ‘best forms of correction’ of primary and higher-order aberration terms. Image evaluation theory, on the other hand, shows that it is the variances of the wave-aberration and of an aberration difference function which determine the tolerances on aberrations, and the best forms of correction, according to the Strehl intensity ratio and transfer function theory respectively. The consequences of using different criteria of image quality are investigated, and it is shown that significantly poorer image quality can result from using more ‘ad hoc’ criteria instead of those based on diffraction theory. It is then shown how the use of canonical variables makes possible the simple use of the appropriate variances as diffraction-based criteria of image quality for optical systems. To optimise the system using least squares techniques then requires new forms of the normal equations. This procedure is described, it being shown that the method of damped least squares, and the Lagrange method of undetermined multipliers, may still be applied to the problem.
