Organic dye lasers have proved to be a high-intensity source of monochromatic radiation that can be tuned to any desired wavelength in the visible range of the spectrum. In this contribution the basic principles of dye laser operation are treated within the model of a suitably modified four-level laser, described in the rate equation approach. The tuning methods based on dispersion by prisms, diffraction by gratings, interferometric effects and polarization effects are discussed. In addition, examples of dye lasers, which are rapidly tunable or which emit simultaneously two or more wavelengths, and some interesting properties of ring lasers are presented.

A flashlamp pumped organic dye laser has recently been operated at an average power output of 114 W. This is the highest average power ever reported for a dye laser. The laser was excited by a high power, vortex stabilized flashlamp. In this type of lamp a fast flow of argon gas is injected near the walls. The gas swirls inward and exits through holes in the electrodes. The fast gas flow provides cooling to allow the lamp to operate at high average power and it also stabilizes the position of the discharge. The lamp was used in an elliptical pumping cavity, with the lamp at one focus. The arc length in the lamp was 10 cm. The dye was circulated through a transverse flow channel at the other focus. The lamp was fired at repetition rates up to 357 Hz and with an energy per pulse of 211 J, i.e. an average power of 75 kW. The laser output pulses had a full width at half maximum of 1·8 μ sec. The average power output increased nearly linearly with repetition rate to a maximum of 114 W at 255 Hz. The achievement of even higher powers was limited by the replacement rate of dye in the channel and a drop in the flashlamp intensity at higher repetition rates. The dye used in these experiments was Rhodamine 6G in an ethanol solution.

Construction and performance characteristics of organic dye lasers, pumped by high power pulsed gas or solid-state lasers, are discussed by reviewing several recently reported dye laser oscillator and oscillator amplifier systems. For spectroscopic applications pulsed lasers are compared to CW lasers and conventional light sources.

This paper reviews research in the field of dye vapour lasers. Early work concentrated on optically pumping dye vapours with ultra-violet laser radiation, while later studies have involved discharge and electron-beam excitation. We will show how studies of dye vapour systems can give information on molecular excitation and relaxation processes, and conclude with a discussion of some of the problems involved in discharge excitation of dye vapour lasers.

A low energy, unconfined spark provides an inexpensive and reliable source of pump radiation for a small dye laser. Kilowatt peak laser output is obtained, using sub-joule spark input energy. Pulse durations of order 10-7sec and repetition rates up to at least several hundred pulses per second are typical. Maintenance-free operation exceeds 106pulses, and a modular design facilitates replacement of expendable components when required.

This paper discusses the possibilities of pulsed high pressure mercury capillary lamps as efficient pumping sources for dye lasers. Spectral measurements show that a spectral efficiency as high as 24 per cent may be reached for a typical blue lasing dye. Laser action has been obtained with Rhodamine 6G with a repetition rate of up to 100 p.p.s., and an experimental threshold in good agreement with the theoretical one, calculated from the spectra. The life of the lamps has been tested, and no reduction of the luminous output has been observed after ∼105pulses. Severe thermal problems have been encountered with blue lasing dyes, which we hope to solve by using watersoluble coumarins.

The relevance of the various dynamical thermal processes which affect the optical properties of a dye solution under flashlamp illumination is examined by means of the appropriate hydrodynamic equations. It is found that the main contribution to the density fluctuations comes from a local Rayleigh term. After a brief discussion of the mechanisms which convert absorbed pump light into heat, the space and time-dependent thermal distortions and the refractive index profiles are evaluated for the case of Rhodamine 6 G in ethanol in a planar geometry. These results yield a basis for a detailed study of the mode behaviour in planar dye lasers. Such an analysis is carried out in the following contribution.

The light propagation and amplification through a planar dye laser are investigated by ray-tracing methods. The radiation lobe is then evaluated with the help of the Malus-Dupin theorem. The numerical results are in satisfactory quantitative agreement with the experiments, when the time evolution of the gradient of the complex refractive index is properly taken into account.
