The aberrations of systems having (1) two axes of symmetry, (2) one axis of symmetry, (3) no axis of symmetry are investigated via Hamilton's mixed characteristic functionW. The mixed characteristicWis also the aberration function in the Luneberg-Kirchhoff diffraction integral. The result is employed to obtain the (incoherent) transfer function for a circular aperture in the presence of these aberrations as well as the point spread function (distribution of illuminance). Typical numerical results are discussed.

Harmonic distortion in the photographic images of sinusoidal objects can be reduced to a negligible amount by the formation of positive images provided certain conditions of exposure and development are met. Experimental results for objects of low spatial frequency are found to agree well with the theoretical predictions and results obtained from extending measurements to higher frequencies follow a predicted pattern. A modulation transfer function can be found for the linearized system, and experimentally, it is shown to have significance in the formation of images of objects other than sine waves.

This paper describes a theoretical assessment of the behaviour of planeand aspherical diffraction gratings in which the spacings of the rulings are unequal. It is shown that with suitably chosen ruling patterns the intensity from a plane grating can be considerably increased but that no similar improvement is possible with an aspherical grating.
