摘要:
The nest building behaviour and repair abilities of weaver birds (Ploceinae) constructing nests of two contrasting types are compared and experiments described. Ploceus philippinus builds a retort‐shaped nest with a long tubular entrance. This structure is main‐tained throughout occupation by wall thickening and tube lengthening. Repairs to extensive damage are quickly made and certain aberrant repairs throw light on the nature of normal construction. The nests of P. melanocephalus and relatives differ in that a roofing layer is inserted, the tube is not developed and the nest is not effectively repaired after occupation. The two types of construction differ primarily in the relative extent of inhibition of building that follows the performance of cortain activities in the course of construction. Thus in melanocephulw the insortion of the roofing layer appears to inhibit work on the outer basket and entrance. There is however some evidence that perception of the species characteristic nest also brings work to an end. In philippinns by contrast the inhibiting effects of lining do not arise, building and rcpnir continue until factors, apparently internal, terminate construction behaviour when the young are well developed in the nest. The adaptive significance of these contrasts is discussed. They comprise alternative adaptations to very similar conditions of nesting in tropical Asia and Afr

摘要:
The advances in our knowledge of this family since it was last revised are summa‐rized. Sixteen species are redoscribed and figured, some for the first time. Three new genera and fourteen new species are described and figured. A key to the genera of the Prodidomidae is given, and the grouping of species within the genus Prodidomus is discusse

摘要:
During the latter half of 1961, six hundred and thirty‐one small mammals (mainly insectivores and rodents), representing approximately fifty species, were trapped in various types of vegetation in Uganda. These included grassland, scrub, palm forest, moist evergreen forest, moist montane forest, bamboo forest and sedge swamp in west and central Uganda as well as dry, tree savanna in the north‐east. Most habitats contained a large number of species wdh appreciable diversity occurring between habitats. Several of the species caught in comparatively large numbers, e.g. Praornys, Hylomyscus, Lemniscomys striatus, Mastoniys and Arvicanthis, showed little reproductive activity. Other species were more active. The reasons for these differences have been discussed. A small amount of information is given on the activity of animals at different times of the

摘要:
A chromatographic study of fiuorescent substances in the body‐surfuce mucus of lyinnaeid snails has shown the existence of a number of ctirointttogruphically distinct forms of Lymnaea peregra. Tho Auorescent patterns of these forms are doscribed arid illustrated and their geographical distribution is mentioned. Evidence of the genetically controlled nature of these patterns is given and tho occurrence of natural hybrids is recorded. The practical uses of the technique in determining the genetic hnogonoily of populations are discussed, also the possible significance of the geographical distribution of the form
