摘要:
Summary.1Water from tanks and reservoirs at the Societ.y's Aquarium has bee11 examined over a period of a year with respect to excess base, hydrogen ion concentration salinity, oxygen content, and pal tial pressure of carbon dioxide.2Similar estimations have been carried ont on fresh sea‐water sent froin tile Bay of Biscay, Plymouth outside sea‐water, Plymouth dquariuin water, aud tank water from University College Aquarium, London.3In all cases the values are found to deviate from the normal to a greater or less extent.4Plymouth Aquarium water maintains a nearly constant pH, as it is treated with lime, but is supersaturated with carbon dioxide.5The Society's Aquarium shows the greatest variation in hydrogen ion concentration and partial pressure of carbon dioxide, but the animals adapt themselves to this.6The rate at which the excess base alters in the Aquarium when a new consignment of water is used was examined.7The advantages of liming aquarium water are discus

摘要:
Summary.1The crabs belonging to the genusSesarmashow a wide range of variation in habits and in the conditions under which they live.S. meinertiis a species that has largely adopted terrestrial habits. A colony of the crabs was found at Beira, living on dry ground near mangrove‐swamps. The habits of the species are described.2An attempt has been made to show that the colour ofS. meinertihas an aposematic function. The vivid colour of the crab, its aggressive behaviour and power of self‐defence, its tough physique and well‐developed power of regeneration, and the relative freedom from the persecution of enemies in which it lives, all point to this conclusion.3The boldness of the species and its ability to defend itself from attack have been adopted in response to the requirements of a more or less terrestrial mode of life, and the aposematic coloration is correlated with the exigencies of this habitat; conspicuousness being useful to the ciabs. the origin and development of the warning colours are to be explained by the operation of natural sele
