摘要:
The foliowing case studies illustrate how the NITA Standards of Practice may be utilized by a nurse to guide the clinical practice of I.V./parenteral nutrition therapy and to promote quality patient care. Because the case studies address only a few points, it is anticipated that the practitioner will refer to the NITA Standards of Practice when clinical questions relative to I.V. Therapy and total parenteral nutrition arise.

摘要:
Customer inquiries and a brief review of the literature indicate that there is a lack of knowledge regarding volumes of central venous catheters. In order to provide practitioners with information concerning the amount of heparin solution necessary to fill such catheters, the volumes of four commonly used central venous catheters and one extension set were measured in the laboratory. Results indicate that the catheters evaluated have a smaller volume than apparently has been assumed. An awareness of these volumes on the part of the practitioner may lead to a reduction in the amount of flush solution injected into the catheter and, ultimately, a reduction in the amount of excess heparin that enters the circulation of catheterized patients.

摘要:
Oncology I.V. nurses need to be teachers as well as technicians. After interviewing oncology physicians, concerned people in the community, cancer patients, and their families, I have identified some feelings and explored ways to deal with them. A person with cancer deserves to be taught how to live with his disease and/or be supported in death with dignity.

摘要:
Some people can remember when electronic flow controllers didn't exist, and an I.V. that infused without a problem was something short of a miracle. Now there are various devices on the market, ranging from basic pumps that monitor the infusion rate to those more sophisticated devices that can perform various tasks simultaneously. It is important for those who are involved with intravenous infusions to be really aware of what is needed when obtaining electronic flow devices for institutions.

摘要:
To develop an understanding of the current practices of the administration of blood products, the Committee on Nursing and Allied Health Professionals of the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) surveyed the 2000 institutional members of the Association. The survey, completed in July 1980, showed that transfusions are primarily being administered by nurses. In reviewing questions related to educational preparation, it was noted that minimal numbers of programs were available for nurses administering transfusions and even fewer numbers of certification examinations.
