摘要:
This paper gives an overview of the techniques and processes used to protect or ‘harden’ electronic equipment against the effects of the Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). Working from an engineering viewpoint, it not only considers how the threat operates and why it is a threat, but also it considers the measures that can be used to counter the threat andwhat these measures are attempting to achieve. Throughout it is stressed that once the decisionto harden a new piece of equipment is taken, the effects of EMP must be considered during all stages of its development. The paper is then concluded with a list of the typical activities that this might entail.

This paper reviews progress in predicting the performance of digital magnetic tape recording channels as manifested in their error rates. The output voltages obtained from head/tape combinations are expressed in terms of defined parameters and these are used in the description of the performance of complete systems suffering from noise and drop-outs.

摘要:
A number of possible methods exist for the transmission and reception of the additional sound signal required for stereo on existing television services and some of them are also suitable for the transmission of independent sound signals, such as may be required for a bi-lingual service. The BBC has investigated several of these possibilities and these are described in the paper. The most recent tests are of a two-carrier system, similar to that now used in West Germany, but modified to suit UK System I television. The early trials of this system indicate that there may be difficulty in providing a signal that would be both compatible with existing receivers and able to provide a two-channel service over the existing coverage area.

摘要:
The ‘signal-space’ approach is put forward as providing a unifying perceptual framework for, and new insights into, the diverse and pervasive field of signal processing. In particular, it provides a convenient means of identifying a number of limiting conditions which must be satisfied by any signal-processing transformation, and it leads to the important new conclusion that the limiting processing gain achievable in any operation is equal to the quantity of known or postulated information embodied in the processing algorithm. The method leads to theoretically optimum solutions in some areas where these may not have been recognized before, and in others it indicates the full scope and/or limitations of optima previously developed or discovered in a more specific context. It is also effective for assessing the penalties and ‘trade-offs’ of practical sub-optimal solutions. The approach dopted is explanatory rather than rigorous and is illustrated by generalized practical examples.
