The entomophilousTaraxacumandLeucanthemumare not generally regarded as harmful allergy causing plants because their pollen grains are normally not present in the air. However, walking throughTaraxacumandLeucanthemumvegetation causes an increase in the atmospheric pollen frequencies. The increase was studied with rotorod traps 0.25, 1 and 1.5 m above the ground. The controls were obtained 1 and 0.5 h before, and immediately after a 30 min walking through the vegetation. The collections were made on four days inTaraxacumand two days inLeucanthemummeadows with four trappings each day. Walking in the vegetation increased the pollen frequencies, especially at the 0.25 m level from 24 to 1404 pollen grains • m-3(Taraxacum) and from 32 to 4424 grains • m-3(Leucanthemum) but less at the 1.5 m height (from 14 to 59 ofTaraxacumand from 12 to 235of Leucanthemum). Thus small children playing on the ground, are subjected more to pollen than adults. The importance of the entomophilous pollen frequencies at various heights as an allergy causing factor should be studied further.

Three examples of wind dipersal of insects into Sweden from south are given, two concerning aphids and one the Colorado beetle. The wind dispersal is regarded as important as a way of increasing the area of distribution for the insect species and in plant protection for man.

In order to study the deposition of infective spores of barley powdery mildew in Denmark during the spring, young barley plants were placed at various sites in 1977 and exposed to ambient conditions for several hours when air mass movements in south to north directions had been predicted. The exposed plants became infected at the southernmost exposure sites on each exposure day: April 28 and May 5 and 6. Only a slight decrease in the number of barley mildew colonies was noted in the south to north direction at distances varying from about 30 to 100 km from the southernmost site, after which an abrupt decrease to zero was recorded at the next more northerly site. Possible causes for the sudden cessation in spore deposition are discussed. If a sudden decrease to zero of deposited conidia generally takes place at different Iaütudes in Denmark in the spring, then the sum of deposited conidia during the period late April to early May might well exhibit a gradual decrease in a south to north direction corresponding to the earlier reported gradual decrease in the number of mildew colonies in barley fields in the period late May to early June.

Short distance dispersal of conidia ofErysiphe graminisfrom a heavily infected winter barley plot was studied during December 1977 to April 1978 by using healthy susceptible plants as spore traps. During December, January and March exposed plants only occasionally became infected beyond trace amounts, whereas from the beginning of April the amount of infection increased by a factor 10 or more. Spore catch was found positively correlated with maximum temperature, maximum and total solar radiation, maximum potential evapotranspiration, and negatively correlated with relative humidity (min.) and leaf wetness. Dispersal beyond trace amounts did not occur on days with precipitation.

Pollen/fungal spore counts have been performed since 1977 in Copenhagen and since 1979 in Copenhagen, Viborg, Nykobing Falster and Nykobing Mors. Four Burkard Seven Day Recording Volumetric Spore Traps were used. Fungal spore counts were performed in the same period using a BIAP Slit Sampler (placed in the Copenhagen area). The study was carried out by the Danish Asthma-Allergy Association's interdisciplinary Aerobiology Group. In 1979 at the Allergy Clinic, Copenhagen County Hospital at Lyngby, data from the pollen/fungal spore counts were compared with daily scores of 95 patients' symptoms and medicine-index. Seventy-eight patients were scored in the entire period where symptoms occurred. For diagnostic purposes of allergy to pollen and fungal spores, previous patient history and symptom scores correlated to the pollen/fungal spore counts showed similarity and to some extent supplementary corrections to the diagnosis based on previous patient history, skin tests, laboratory tests, and provocation tests.
