The Pollen Morphology of the Haloragaceae with Reference to Taxonomy |

Pollen morphological investigations of the family Haloragaceae were carried out using light microscopy supplemented by electron microscopical studies. An attempt was made to correlate the pollen morphology with the taxonomy of the family. The pollen morphological data provide clear support in favour of the division of the family into two separate families, respectively, Haloragaceae and Gunneraceae. Both subfamilies, i.e., Haloragoideae Schindl. (excluding a few species in the subsection Spongiocarpus Schindl.) and Gunneroideae Schindl., are stenopalynous. Important arguments concerning pollen morphology, gross morphology, ecology, and type of pollination, favour a regroupment of theHaloragisspecies belonging to the subsection Spongiocarpus, which is related to the genusLaudoniaLindl. Eventual fusion of theseHaloragisspecies in the subsection Spongiocarpus with the genusLoudoniais worth consideration.

摘要:
The development of the exine of young acetolysed pollen grains ofEchinops banaticushas been studied by measuring the thickness of the mesocolpia and apocolpia. Within the pollen mother cell wall the exine develops more or less uniformly except at places where apertures will be formed. After the release of the pollen grains from the pollen mother cell wall the thickness of the apocolpia decreases gradually. At the same time the young pollen grain is stretched in the direction of the polar axis. It is suggested, that the volume enlargement of the cell content is correlated with material transport from the tapetum through the apocolpia.

Table I shows that two letters (S, N) and two figures (1, 2) can be used as symbols or “labels” instead of more or less complicated and/or ambiguous terms in labelling the main topographical and/or non-topographical sub-units or parts of angiosperm exine types (at least as far as present knowledge goes). Special attention has been paid to the characteristics of the nexine inEpilobium montanumbelieved to be “nexine-2” (N2) by Erdtman and others, albeit classified as “nexine-1, footlayer of the ektexine” by Rowley et al. (1970; p. 7).
