摘要:
The author considers whether there is any advantage to be gained in eliminating the use of nomenclatural type for spore genera, as already proposed by among others Gunnar Erdtman in 1947. In the author's Synopsis the ‘turmae’, as well as taxa above familial rank in the “natural system” of Engler and Prantl have no type. Type abolition is not advocated in the case of form species of spores. The references at the end (Potonié, R., 1931–1973) illustrate the author's changing view-point in taxonomical treatment of the Sporae dispersae over the years elapsed since the proposals of Henry Potonié in 1909, before finally adopting the type method of the ICBN.

A new genus of striate saccate pollen,Caelopollisis described from the Virgilian (Pennsylvanian) of Kansas. A striate distal leptoma serves to distinguish the genus and four new species of striate pollen. One new species ofVittatina, V. moorei,is described that also possesses an unusual type of distal ornamentation.

The common mode of angiosperm pollen ontogeny, as exemplified inCampanula persicifolia, C. rotundifoliaandC. rapunculoides,is reviewed. A comparison is made with that seen inEleocharis(Cyperaceae), in which the tetrad generally gives rise to a single viable pollen grain, the remaining cells degenerating. The intracellular distribution of, and fine structural changes in the various organelles are related to the morphogenetic stages of pollen wall formation, viz. the callose, primexine template and probacula (the first exine). The tissue surrounding the pollen is briefly described.

摘要:
The ultrastructure of meiotic cells and ascospores of the ascomyceteOphiostoma multiannulatumhas been examined. The young asci contain nuclei, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum and the ripe asci are rich in lipid droplets. Thin filaments have been observed in the mitochondria, they probably consist of DNA. The ascospores are uninucleate and surrounded by a thin cell wall.

Morphological data are presented on the pollen ofLimnocharis flavaBuch.,Hydrocleis nymphoides(Willd.) Buch., andTenagocharis latifolia(Don) Buch. These data suggest that the structure of the germinal aperture is taxonomically more pertinent in the Limnocharitaceae than the structure of the interporal exine and indicate some similarities in pollen morphology and fine structure between particular taxa in the Limnocharitaceae and Alismataceae.

A positive [MATTER UNCLEAR IN PDF FILE]atalase reaction, using a modification of the Graham & [MATTER UNCLEAR IN PDF FILE]arnovsky method, was obtained from the microbodies of [MATTER UNCLEAR IN PDF FILE]pore cells at both developmental stages, as well as from [MATTER UNCLEAR IN PDF FILE]it-membrane-bounded outgrowths from the chloroplasts. The outgrowths showed other morphological similarities with microbodies. This cytochemical finding supports our [MATTER UNCLEAR IN PDF FILE]revious opinion that microbodies may bud off from the [MATTER UNCLEAR IN PDF FILE]hloroplasts, as well as developing from the endoplasmic [MATTER UNCLEAR IN PDF FILE]eticulum. A positive catalase reaction was obtained only within the cell cytoplasm. Other peroxidases are present within the cell wall matrix however.

Altogether 100 specimens of 16 species of this highly diversified genus have been studied. Pollen morphology has been found useful in the grouping of the species, but of no use for distinguishing between species within the same group. The three earlier established pollen-types, theCrassiuscula-,Kilimandscharica-andVolkensii-types, have been confirmed. The inter- and intraspecific variation in theCrassiuscula-type, is mainly in sexine thickness, shape of bacula and processes. In the other two types, the variation is mainly in sexine pattern, shape and width of lirae. The three pollen-types are illustrated with scanning electron micrographs (SEMG) and transmission electron micrographs (TEMG).
