Pollen of representatives of all genera previously assigned to the ‘Cotuleae’, as well asMinuriafrom the Astereae, is described from studies under light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy.Cotulas. str.,Leptinella, NanantheaandSolivaare characterized by exines with anthemoid structure; this supports the conclusion that these are natural members of the tribe Anthemideae. The affinities of the non-anthemoid genera are discussed in the light of data on exine structure.Abrotanella, IschneaandCentipedahave senecioid exines, whileCeratogyne, Dimorphocoma, Elachanthus, Isoetopsis, MinuriaandPlagiocheilushave helianthoid exines. Marked differences are shown between the exines ofAbroianellaandIschneawhich do not support the existence of a very close affinity between them. Evidence is provided to support the link betweenIsoetopsisandElachanthusthat has been proposed on the basis of cypsela characters.

摘要:
The different definitions of the terms heterocolpate and pseudocolpi used by different authors are presented to illustrate the confusing use of the term heterocolpate. The morphological nature of the heterocolpate condition is investigated with reference to the structure of the colpi and pseudocolpi of selected heterocolpate pollen grains from the Sudanese Flora. LM and SEM were used. Cracking and fracturing techniques through the equatorial plane and passing through the different apertures were examined. As a result it is suggested that the term heterocolpate is restricted to: “pollen grains which possess two (or more) types of colpi, of which one type differs in length and/or the presence or absence of endoapertures, exine thinnings, invaginations or microstructures”.

Aeropalynological studies have shown a marked increase in recent years due to the many related disciplines that rely on this subject for information. A short analysis of this trend is followed by a presentation of the results of a 5 week survey of the airspora spectrum of an industrial site central to the greater Cape Town region (South Africa), during winter, 1987. The results indicate that fungal spores dominate the airspora spectrum during this period; with basidiospores the most dominant fungal spore and Poaceae the most dominant pollen. Daily volumetric concentrations of pollen and fungal spores are then correlated with several meteorological variables, including wind velocity, temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, atmospheric pressure and sunshine hours. Single and multiple regressional analysis indicates that significant correlations exist between pollen concentrations, temperature, relative humidity, and sunshine hours and between spore concentrations, sunshine hours and wind velocity.

The “exposed plate” method was used to trap fungal spores from the atmosphere of Wadi Qena over a period of one year (January-December 1985). 83 species and 2 varieties representing 31 genera were collected. The most frequently isolated genera on mesophilic and osmophilic media includedAlternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Cumularia, Drechslera, Epicoccum, Penicillium, StemphyliumandUlocladium; their counts fluctuated irregularly.Alternaria altérnala, Aspergillus nidulans, A. niger, A. sydowi, A. terreus, Cladosporium cladosporioides, C. herbarum, Cumularia lunata, Drechslera spicifera, Epicoccum purpurascens, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. citrinum, Stemphylium botryosumandUlocladium botrytiswere the most prevalent species. Also,Eurotium(represented byE. amstelodami, E. chevalieriandE. rubrum) was only encountered frequently on osmophilic medium. On halophilic mediumAspergillus sydowiwas common followed byAspergillus nidulans, A. niger, A. terreusandCladosporium herbarum. Fungi isolated have been tested for osmophilic and halophilic ability and they showed different rates of growth on sucrose- and sodium chloride-Czapek's medium of various osmotic potential. Members ofAspergillusandEurotiumwere considerably the most resistant and able to grow on sodium chloride agar medium of osmotic potential reached to -175.7 or -218.45 bars.

Airborne red oak (Quercus rubra) allergens were collected with volumetric air samplers during 1983–1985 and quantitated immunochemically using red oak pollen proteins adsorbed to plastic microtiter plates and pooled IgE-containing sera from seven oak-sensitive persons. Peak levels of allergen occurred in late April to early May and coincided with peak oak pollen counts from Rotoslide collections. However, additional peaks of oak allergenic activity were measured during July through early October, at times when oak pollen was not airborne. Most of the allergen was in particles smaller than 5 microns even during the pollination period. These peaks coincided with changes in wind from the usual northwest direction to a southernly direction. Among 19 other tree, grass, weed, mold, or insect allergens tested, only birch, and, to a lesser extent, willow, cross-reacted with red oak. We postulate that bits of decaying leaves, male catkins during the summer and early fall and other plant particles become airborne during changes in wind direction and velocity. Because other allergens, such as ragweed,Alternaria, grass and insects, are also abundant in late summer and fall, it will be very difficult to determine the degree to which this oak allergen contributes to late summer hay fever and asthma.

The application of silver paint on specimen mounts to form berms is helpful in localizing pollen for examination with scanning electron microscopy. This is especially useful with rectangular boats because pollen located on the boundaries is out of the field of view when examined at high magnifications. Silver berms are not an impediment to photography and pollen grains lying on them are often better grounded, thus enhancing the final image. Distracting silver backgrounds can be “painted out” of the prints if desired. Berms can also be used effectively on circular specimen mounts, particularly when small quantities of rare pollen or even an isolated fossil pollen grain needs to be centered for high resolution study.

Because microscopical identification and counting is vital in most aerobiological studies, pollen and spores are usually collected on some adhesive. The adhesives should not be water-soluble. For optically best results water-soluble mounting media with refractive indices about 1.40–1.45 are used. There are compatibility problems between water insoluble adhesives and watery mounting media. The former tend to move to stripes or droplets, distorting the image and moving the spores from their original positions. To solve this problem several adhesives based on silicone oils, silicone greases and vaseline or their mixtures were tested. The usual watery mounting media, glycerine gelatine, gum arabic and polyvinyl alcohol based mixtures were tested for their compatibility with adhesives, optical quality and durability. Most combinations and all those in common use proved to be unsatisfactory. The best adhesive was a mixture of vaseline, silicone oil and paraffin wax. The best mounting medium was composed of polyvinyl alcohol, water, glycerol and lactic acid.

摘要:
An aeropalynological survey by gravitational sampler was done in St. Mary's Hill of Kurseong, a subtropical biozone of Eastern Himalayas at 1650 m altitude for a period of two years (March 1981-February 1983) to record the incidence and frequency of airborne pollen grains. A total of 32 pollen types were recorded where tree pollen grains showed dominance over those of grasses and weeds. Frequency of established allergenic pollen grains was fairly high throughout the year.
