The pollen of 20 species, 53 collections, ofOcimumand 6 species from 4 closely allied genera:BeciumLindl.,DauphineaHedge,ErythrochlamysGuerke andOrthosiphonBenth. was acetolysed and examined with light, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. Four pollen types are described, three are subdivided. Keys are provided to the types and subtypes. Results show some notable parallels with taxonomic opinion. A number of examples are cited in which the pollen morphology supports recent or proposed taxonomic changes, for example the transfer ofErythrochlamys cufodontiiLanza andE. nummularia(S. Moore) Hedge toOcimum, ofOcimum hanningtoniiBaker toOrthosiphonand of bothOcimum irvineiJ. K. Morton andO. urundinenseRobyns & Lebrun toBecium. Parallels with pollen types are drawn between Old and New World species; Pollen Type I occurs in both the Old and New Worlds while Pollen Types II, III and IV are exclusively Old World. Data from geographic distribution and pollen morphology suggest that Pollen Type I is the basal type forOcimum. A previously unexploited character, presence or absence of mucilage on the nutlets of different species is compared with the distribution of pollen types withinOcimum. Presence of mucilage is particularly associated with Pollen Type II (A,B) species which comprise sectionOcimumsubsectionOcimum. Mucilage is also noted on the nutlets of the only two New World species in the present study which have been examined for this character, both species have pollen of Type IA. Summary tables are provided for comparative data.

Pollen grains ofUlexare isopolar, 3-zonocolporate with an ill-defined endoaperture, and tectateperforate to reticulate. The pollen grains have distinct internal folds due to the thickening of the endexine along the colpi. The general morphology does not vary substantially from one taxon to another, but the pollen wall structure is very variable. Three types have been recognized based on the stratification: Type I: a compact structure with an ill-developed infratectum mainly composed of granules; Type II: a transitional infratectal layer composed by granules and columellae; and finally, Type III: with a well differentiated columellar infratectum.

Der Pollen von 338 Arten aus 31 Gattungen der Familie der Bromeliaceae wurde untersucht und mit der systematischen Stellung der Arten in Verbindung gebracht. Der überwiegende Teil der Bromeliaceen besitzt sulcaten, ein kleinerer Teil poraten oder inaperturaten Pollen mit reticulater, foveolater oder glatter Oberfläche. Die Form und Ausbildung des Sulcus — es lassen sich 6 verschiedene Typen unterscheiden — kann in manchen Fällen als systematisches Merkmal dienen. Insgesamt spiegelt die Pollenmorphologie die Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen in der Familie wider. Gut abgegrenzte Sippen sind auch pollenmorphologisch einheitlich, umgekehrt sind systematisch problematische Sippen auch im Pollenbau heterogen.

The development of the sporoderm inAsimina trilobabefore the dissolution of callose proceeds as follow: 1) the initiation and accumulation of prematrix substances, 2) the establishment of the “phantom of ectexine”, 3) the prematrix formation of double origin: microsporal and tapetal, 4) the differentiation of primexine matrix and the beginning of protosporopollenin accumulation on the primordial lamella of the foot layer and in protectum, 5) the differentiation of procolumellae in primexine matrix. The sequence of events corresponds to the general scheme of Dickinson, but the peculiar feature is the formation of prematrix prior to appearance of the ordinary primexine matrix.

A survey of atmospheric fungal spores was carried out in north west of Amman, Jordan for a whole year (June 1987 — May 1988), using a Burkard Seven day recording Volumetric Spore Trap. A total of 14 families and 38 genera, belonging to three classes were recorded. Daily and monthly counts of fungal spores were carried out and a spore calendar was plotted for the first time in the study area. The calendar showed that Ascomycetes were highly abundant between January and May, while maximum trapped basidiospores occurred between April and August. In contrast, Deuteromycetes were most common in October.

Pollen ofRicinus communis, an important aeroallergen was collected from different stages of development of flower, different time intervals, different years and different places in India, to see variability, if any, in the protein content and protein profiles of the extracts. The protein content showed significant variation in the extracts from different sources. IEF and SDS — PAGE protein profiles from pollen antigens of mature buds and flowers showed almost similar pattern. However, appreciable variation was recorded in the protein pattern of pollen extracts from different years and places. It is therefore suggested to have a comprehensive quality control of pollen raw materials before processing for antigenic extracts.
