The pollen of the monotypic genusParapteropyrumand 10 species from three putatively related genera (Pteropyrum, AtraphaxisandCalligonum) in the tribe Atraphaxideae was examined by light and scanming electron microscopy. Three pollen types, differing in exine sculpturing can be recognized: (1) microreticulate inParapteropyrumandPteropyrum(2) striato-reticulate to striate inAtraphaxis(3) punctate with perforations in mostCalligonumspecies. Pollen grains ofParapteropyrumandPteropyrumare morphologically very similar and the only difference between them is in size. Pollen morphology therefore does not support a generic distinction forParapteropyrum. The distinctive surface pattern ofAtraphaxispollen grains suggests no very close relationship withParapteropyrumandPteropyrumnor with those species ofCalligonuminvestigated. From palynological data it seems probable thatAtraphaxisevolved independently into a specialized group from the common ancestral stock of the tribe Atraphaxideae.

The pollen of 15 species ofIndigoferafrom Taiwan was studied by means of light microscopy, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. The pollen of these species is classified into five types on the basis of exine structure, perforations, shape of tectum channels, granular or columellate interstitium, and prominent or reduced foot layer. Subdivisions of each type are based on the ornamentation of the tectate surface on the apocolpia and the mesocolpia. It is suggested that Type I is the most primitive and that Type II has evolved from it. Type II has undergone a multiplication of granules, an elaboration of the tectum and a reduction of foot layer to form the most complex Type III. Type II has also evolved towards a modification of the columellae to form the lamellate interstitium of Type IV. Through a reduction of the lamellate granular layer of Type IV the single granular layer of Type V has formed. It is also possible that Type 1.3 has undergone a reduction of the columellae to produce the single granular interstitium of Type V. Pollen data can be used in the identification of some of theIndigoferaspecies of Taiwan.

Records of pollen concentrations and meteorological data from five years of sampling in North London are used to develop models to predict daily Poaceae pollen counts. These models are developed using a variety of techniques including the use of a third-order polynomial curve to forecast potential pollen concentration and the use of accumulated meteorological variables. They are then tested for accuracy in forecasting the 1991 Poaceae pollen season. A model developed using accumulated average temperature, daily rainfall, relative humidity and maximum temperature as predictor variables attains an accuracy of 71% for the 1991 season. These models are designed specifically for their ease of use in practice and their reliance on meteorological variables that may be forecast in advance. They are also novel in attempting a forecast of daily pollen concentration based upon an estimate of the potential severity of the season instead of using a retrospective record of pollen abundance as previous authors have done.

The features of five grass pollen seasons from two areas of contrasting climate were investigated and the relative importance of the variables controlling daily variations were determined. The records from London, UK (temperate maritime climate) and Córdoba, Spain (mediterranean climate) were analysed in relation to meteorological factors. The length of the seasons differs a great deal between the two locations and from year to year. However the total cumulative catches and the number of days with counts over 50 grains metre-3are similar for the two locations. Regression analysis of standardised daily average pollen counts shows clearly that for London, maximum and average temperatures are the most important factors influencing daily variation. In the case of Córdoba this relationship holds true for the period from the start of the season until the peak count, but after this the relationship becomes negative. Hours of sunshine and humidity are also important. The negative effect of increased humidity on pollen release is most marked in the data for Córdoba but it is also apparent in the case of London. The results emphasise the need for individual analysis in different climates and the application of different statistical treatments depending on the operation of the variables.

The outdoor aeromycota was studied in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada throughout 1992. The dominant outdoor airborne fungal genera and groups recorded on 58 sampling dates wereCladosporium(41.0%), unidentified basidiospores (12.1%), unidentified spores (8.5%),Ganoderma(7.2%), unidentified ascospores (5.3%),Leptosphaeria(5.3%), Coprinaceae (5.0%), hyphal fragments (4.9%),Aspergillus/Penicillium(3.8%),Alternaria(1.8%), andEpicoccum(1.3%). Most common outdoor genera showed distinct diumal periodicities from May to October, with the exception ofAspergillus/Penicillium. Most hyphomycetes displayed daytime peaks, except forAspergillus/Penicillium. Ascospores ofLeptosphaeriahad morning peaks, and basidiospores ofGanodermaand Coprinaceae had early morning patterns. Most common outdoor genera, except forAspergillus/Penicillium, also displayed well defined seasonal patterns, with peak periods between May and October.

Many people suffer from allergic diseases and much research has illustrated that pollen can play an important role in inducing such diseases. The fact that allergic symptoms are more prevalent in larger cities may be related to the increase in air pollution resulting from the mineral or synthetic materials released into the atmosphere by cars and factories. On the other hand, recent investigations have considered that it is the exinic mineral elements which induce or control pollen allergenicity. Different degrees ofPinus eldericaallergenicity in guinea pigs were studied along with the ultrastructural changes and variation in the mineral element concentration of the pollen exine after exposure of the pollen to the atmosphere of Tehran for certain periods. The results were analyzed qualitively and also statistically by the unpaired T test, whenever necessary. P values of < 0.005 were considered significant.

Benzoic acid, its 2-hydroxy (salicylic acid) and 4-hydroxy derivatives were identified amongst substances leached from hydrating pollen of several plant species common in New Zealand.Acacia dealbata(wattle) andCedrus atlanticapollen released all three compounds while two were leached from pollen ofPinus radiata(Monterey Pine) andCupressus macrocarpa. The substances were generally present in microgram (per gram pollen) levels. Similar extracts of ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and privet (Ligustrum lucidum) pollen were devoid of these substances while birch (Betula pendula) pollen contained only benzoic acid. Salicylic acid and its benzoic acid metabolite are of significance because of the plant hormone activity of the former. The possibility is also raised of effects of pollen exposure on respiratory function unrelated to protein allergens due to pharmacological activity associated with these compounds.
