The Amaranthaceae is a family within the order Caryophyllales and comprises approx. 800 species in about 70 genera. A representative selection of 130 species from 67 genera was studied. The pollen was found to be generally pantoporate. High resolution scanning electron microscopy and additional light microscopy revealed many new characters of the apertures, in particular of the ektexinous bodies on the aperture membrane, of the exine microsculpture, of the wall ultrastructure, and information on pollenkitt. The subsequent analysis of the resulting large data set led to the recognition of 17 well defined pollen types. The taxonomic distribution of pollen characters in the Amaranthaceae indicates that pollen morphology is informative at different taxonomic levels. Certain pollen characters can be used to circumscribe genera or groups of genera, and often also to distinguish species. Unique within the angiosperms are the hook‐shaped, stellately arranged ektexinous bodies covering the pore membranes in pollen of nine genera. Palynological data support the basic subdivision of the Amaranthaceae into the Amaranthoideae and Gomphrenoideae, but indicate that the commonly accepted tribes and subtribes in the classification of Schinz are largely polyphyletic. Pollen characters further provide evidence that a previously described pollination syndrome involving betalains as optical attractants is derived within the Amaranthaceae.

The palynology ofAcmadenia(Diosminae: Rutaceae), a taxonomically problematic genus, was investigated to determine its taxonomic significance. Pollen of 32 of the 33 species, and one undescribed species, was investigated by LM, SEM and TEM techniques. Exine structure is extremely variable in proportion to the size of the genus, with seven distinct types and four subtypes being discerned. Species groupings elucidated by the pollen types suggest relationships between species which were not previously apparent. Pollen data supports morphological evidence for the re‐classification ofAcmadenia.A redefinedAcmadeniais proposed to consist of 23 species, whereas the remainder of the taxa should be referred to new or closely related existing genera.

Investigations of the composition of pollen loads collected by the honeybee in five areas of Galicia (NW Spain) and five areas of Umbria (Central Italy) have demonstrated that specific combinations of pollen grains in the corbicula pollen are related to the geographical origin of the pollen loads. Spanish and Italian pollen loads are clearly differentiated by the presence or absence of characteristic pollen grains. Large quantities ofEucalyptus, Cytisus scoparius‐type, Genista, LotusandJasioneare found in the Galician honeybee pollen whilst in the pollen from UmbriaOnohrychis(Dipsacaceae),Trifolium pratenseL.,Cornus, VlmusandGalegapredominate. This information can be useful in understanding the ethology of the honeybee in biogeographically different areas.

Correct sampling of airborne biological particles is the most critical step in aerobiological studies. It is common not to take account of the difference between the true atmospheric concentration, and the apparent concentration, as measured with rotating‐arm impactors. The difference can be quantified by the sampling efficiency (E5). I demonstrate that such differences can lead to substantial errors in many fields of aerobiology. Because of the continuing mis‐use of such aerobiological samplers I present a review of concepts and an examination of previous experimental and theoretical attempts to ascertainEs.I take the example of the widely‐used rotorod sampler.

Pollen of birch(Betula)and grass (Poaceae) are the main cause of seasonal allergy in northern European countries. Allergic symptoms may also occur outside the local pollen season. From the point of view of allergic sufferers, it is important to know how long pollen retains its sensitising power. The maintenance of antigenic activity under different experimental conditions was studied over a period of one year. Pollen of birch(Betula pendulaRoth.,B. pubescensEhrh.) and timothy(Phleum pratenseL.) grass was collected in the summer of 1995 in south‐western Finland. Pollen samples were incubated in petri dishes in separate desiccators, at 20°C at relative humidities of 23%, 33%, 43%, and 54%, which coincides with typical values in Finnish homes. Control pollen samples were stored under room conditions. The samples were analysed with igG‐ELISA (enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay) using monoclonal (specific to Bet ν 1) and polyclonal birch pollen antibodies and Phl p 5 antibody, with SDS‐PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulphate‐polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) and IgE‐immunoblotting using sera from birch pollen allergic subjects. Birch and grass pollen antigenic activity remained high in all treatments during the entire study period. Different relative humidities had no detectable effect on the antigen concentrations.

Allergy evaluation studies using the antigens of nine commonly occuring airborne pollen grains in the state of Kerala, India were made. This includes the pollen grains ofAreca catechu, Casuarina equisetifolia, Elaeis guinensis, Heteropogon contortus, Oreodoxa regia, Peltophorum ferrugineum, Phoenix dactylifera, Spathodea campanulataandSwietenia mahagony.Five hundred patients having respiratory complaints were selected for the study using these tropical pollen grains. Results were analysed in terms of age, sex, clinical history, family history and locality of the patients. TheOreodoxaantigen registered the maximum significant positivity followed byHeteropogon, CasuarinaandPeltophorum.Age and family history of the patient had no direct influence in the positivity, but nature of the allergy, sex, phenological period and locality of the patient had a direct influence in hypersensitivity reactions. Similarly a very high positive correlation between Skin Test and Bronchial Provocation Test to these allergens among the tropical population was also proved. Thus the results established the role of these tropical allergens in eleciting Ig E mediated allergic reactions.
