Pollen grains of more than 120 species from c. 40 genera of Malvaceae were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains are spiny, usually spheroidal and an evolutionary trend from a medium sized, ancestral 3-zonocolporate pollen type with small spines to a large polytreme type with long, sometimes distinctly dimorphic spines is recognised. The most simple of the intermediate types have the apertures spaced over the pollen surface creating a pattern very much like the seam on a tennis ball. This and other evolutionary trends in the pollen morphology are discussed in comparison with common classification, cytology and phytogeography of the family. A revised and simplified method for calculating the number of apertures on polyporate pollen grains is also presented. This method compensates for the spherical excess, inaccuracies arising from formulae which treat curved surfaces as flat.

The Lower Cretaceous Jydegård Formation has been palynologically analysed. The finegrained Rødbjerg Member was examined in two boreholes in the Nyker fault-block and the coarse-grained Tornhøj Member was examined in an exposed section in the Robbedale region. Organic debris from fine-grained beds throughout the formation was evaluated for dinoflagellate cyst assemblages, for the proportion of dinoflagellate cysts to pollen and spores and for palynofacies. The three methods reflect different parameters of the depositional environment and 5 organic facies have been defined on the basis of variation in these parameters. The organic facies are interpreted as mainly reflecting fresh versus brackish water and oxygenated versus anoxic depositional environments. The organic facies are compared with the sedimentological interpretation of the formation and a depositional history is constructed. The Rødbjerg Member is a lagoonal mud deposited in brackish water under highly anoxic bottom conditions. The environment became slightly more marine and oxygenated in the middle of the member but returned to brackish and finally fresh water in the upper part. The Tornhøj Member was deposited in a back-barrier environment, dominated by alternating fresh and brackish water in the lower part. The upper part was deposited in a fluviatile fresh water environment.

The major forest types of the Balsam Mountains in western North Carolina produce distinctive assemblages of arboreal pollen that can be used to characterize past vegetation based upon pollen profiles from small bogs, forest soils, and woodland-hollow pools. Comparison of pollen assemblages derived from moss polsters within forest sample plots indicates that although certain pollen types are abundantly produced and widespread both within and between forest zones, other pollen types are either distributed mainly within the forest type in which they are produced or occur only locally within a sampled stand. Many species and genera are indicators of specific forest types.

While exposure/symptom relationships are relatively well-defined for pollen allergens, such relationships have not been clearly established for airborne fungus spores due to a lack of clearly defined seasonal patterns, prevalence of world-wide cosmopolitan fungi, and serious problems with sampling and identification. Ascospores and basidiospores have been least studied with respect to aerobiology, although both are clearly allergenic. Preliminary data on allergenicity and diurnal and seasonal prevalence patterns for selected ascospore and basidiospore types are presented.

The aerobiology of molds and their products includes a significant contribution to human atopy.Alternariaallergens are numerous and vary qualitatively and quantitatively in extracts used for allergy diagnosis and immunotherapy. Progress in the isolation and characterization of these allergens is discussed, including a major acid allergen, Alt-1, and a low molecular weight basic allergen. The detection and characterization of human allergens from mycelial and spore extracts, as well as the demonstration of cross-reactivity among different mold species and genera, is also deemed important. A variety of techniques used in allergen research is described.
