The article reviews the situation of the Spanish trade unions since 1986 concluding that despite the fragmentation of corporatism and their organisational weakness, the unions have been able to retain a significant role in Spanish society but now face a major challenge.

The stalemate that persists within the Dutch Federation of Trade Unions (FNV) concerning organisational restructuring is analysed from an interorganisational perspective. Data on power resources of the affiliated unions show that three large unions dominate decision making. Decreasing power of the federal organisation, bilateral arrangements and, possibly, amalgamations are expected.

This article argues that there is no one ideal wage determination system for gender pay equity. Different forms and levels of regulation provide different services and functions. Specific policies need to be sensitive to conditions within European member states with the EC acting as a catalyst to and monitor of change.

The causes of the 1993 strike by 1300 workers at Yarrow Shipbuilders are examined. A managerial offensive, which included a restructuring of the labour process, was instigated by the Thatcher government's privatisation of the shipbuilding industry. Drawing on shop stewards' committee minute books, particular emphasis is given to the trade union response to management's confrontationalist approach.

Attempts to use WIRS 3 data to assess the impact of HRM and specialist personnel management have produced implausible, inconclusive and contradictory results–demonstrating the severe limitations of the new macro‐survey approach to industrial relations research.
